Chapter 49 [Revelations]

I thought I was already strong for this, but I wasn't. I thought I was ready, but I wasn't. There were a lot of things that I thought I was, but it turns out that I was still the same old Harper. The reckless and desperate Harper who would do anything to get what he wanted. It's such a shame to think that I got over it when I really didn't. I was just making myself believe, I was fooling myself to think that I'm different now.

I was looking down on the cup of hot coffee on the table, pero mukhang lalamig na ito dahil kanina ko pang hindi nagagalaw. Pag-angat ko ng tingin ay nakita ko ang pagsimsim ni Ate Catalina sa kanyang tasa.

"So how's your condition? Have you fully recovered?" she asked after she put down her cup of coffee.

"We both know we're not here to talk about that." I muttered bluntly, pretending to be brave even though my knees were shaking.

We were in a coffee shop. I asked her to come to talk about something important. I know she has a clue but she's still acting oblivious about the purpose of this meeting.

Nang mapansin kong umangat ang isang sulok ng kanyang labi, alam kong may ideya na siya kung ano ang maaaring pakay ko sa kanya.

"What do you want to know, Harper?" she asked in a soft and calming voice. She's been so nice to me even before but now the nicety she was showing infuriates me.

I sipped on my cup of coffee to earn some guts. Dahil nandito nalang din ako, kailangan kong magpatuloy nang sa gayon ay maliwanagan ako. Because as much as I hate it, she's the one who could give me the answers I'm looking for.

"The custody..." panimula ko saka ibinaba ang tasa. "Why are you fighting for custody over Bullet?" matapang kong tanong. It might seem that it wasn't my place to ask but the fact that the father of her kid is my boyfriend somehow involves me in their conflict.

Her lips rose for a smile that I wasn't expecting at all. "Is the fact that I'm his mother not enough?" she reasoned out with sarcasm. I know she's his mother but did she really act like one?

"You were never there for him. You just abandoned him. Is that how mothers take care of their child?" there was bitterness in my voice because stealing Bullet from his father and from me bothered me. Though I don't know a thing about motherhood, but caring over your own child is pretty basic.

Bumagsak ang ngiti niya at saka ako tinitigan nang mariin at may tamang diin. "You don't know what you're talking about, Harper. Don't speak like you know the whole story." aniya, seryoso na ang kanyang tono.

"The whole story?" I scoffed, I almost wanted to laugh. "You mean, how you gave birth to him and then leave him at his father's front door then leave to study abroad so you can live again as a single woman? Is that it?" prangka kong pahayag dahil wala naman akong ibang maisip na maaaring hindi ko nalalaman tungkol sa sinasabi niyang istorya. Blade didn't tell me about those but Tito Henry once mentioned it to me how Bullet was left at the doorstep.

Kitang-kita ko ang pagdaan ng mapait na ngiti sa kanyang mga labi. She leaned backwards and crossed her arms on her chest. She seemed like she already lost the last thread of her patience. Well, that's good. The more she's delirious, the more she's gonna babble so I can gather more information about the issue.

"I didn't leave him at the doorstep." ang una niyang sinabi ay hindi ko magawang paniwalaan. Oh, now she's gonna feed me with lies? Why does everyone love to lie anyway? Ano bang mabuting maidudulot ng pagsisinunghaling?

"I worked as a trainer before. Hindi pa kami ni Atom no'n. Blade and I had an affair but it was only one time. Yes, I had feelings for him but I hadn't had the chance to fight for it because my parents didn't like him. At nang malaman nilang ipinagbubuntis ko ang anak namin, they gave me an ultimatum..." tahimik akong nakinig sa kanyang kwento. I wasn't exactly sure if any of it was true, but the way she expressed her story made me feel that somehow.... it's true.
