Dominick
Luckily for us, when we got to the airport there was a plane about to depart and it was heading for home. Malik talked his way around the staff and we'd managed to get three seats near the back. It almost felt like lifetimes ago since we were in Sweden, when in reality it was mere hours. The whole flight was filled with unrelenting anxiety that none of us could calm down from, I held onto Emily's hand and wondered how we were going to get through all of this.
If the moon goddess could even be trusted with the basic facts, there had to be a balance according to the old stories. The Moon goddess and the sun god worked together to keep the world lit and running as it should. My ancestor had granted the moon goddess a part of himself. The light that he had given her was back at her cottage, I was assuming that the burning flame was what had prevented a complete shift in the balance up until now. We might be okay if we removed her from the picture, but she would need a replacement.
The sun God's part in this could very well be resolved by keeping that flame lit, but how would we know what was to happen to the world if the moon goddess was no longer in it? And that is the part that was scaring me most.
We had no idea what was happening on the other side and that fact alone was killing me. The moon goddess had disappeared and we had no idea where she had gone either. Everything was up in the air. A lot could've happened in the hours that we aren't there and that's what I worried about most as we raced towards the pack. We didn't need a car, our speed on four legs surpassed any other form of transport and the faster we got there, the quicker we could judge the situation.
My paws hit the earth, my body swerved between trees and my mind was focused on all of the possible outcomes of this. Maybe I would have to give myself up anyway? Maybe there was no way that I could escape the fate I was born into. The sound of static filling my head gradually as I tried to connect to Alpha Logan. If we could find out what was going before we got there, we would be a little more prepared and we could jump straight into planning.
My mind created a bridge using the Alpha link, I could feel his earthy presence on the other side. That was a good sign, he wasn't dead at least. "Logan? Can you hear me?" I sent out across the mind link. It was like trying to tune a radio into a station, I could hear strange sounds, but nothing sounded like Logan and nothing was clear enough for me to understand or focus on.
As my head moved around, trying to tune in and improve the link, I saw a darkness in the sky. At first it looked like dark clouds rolling over, but at a closer inspection I saw that it was something far worse than rain. I signalled to Malik and shut my link with Logan to speak with him. "Look over there" I told him, "which pack is that coming from?" Malik's wolf ears set back against his head as he stuck his nose in the air, "it's not coming from a pack, Alpha. Whatever it is, it's heading for the Midnight Moon pack."
Good god. What had happened over here? I couldn't remember seeing swarms like this in the reality I was thrown into, but I had joined the chaos far too late. Maybe this was what's caused so much of the damage? "Where do we go?" Malik questioned, and honestly I had no idea. I wanted to check on my pack, I wanted to be with my people, but Logan would need all the help he could get if this was what we were dealing with.
I heard a buzzing in the back of my head, a faint voice came through the link not long after. "You're back!?" It sounded panicked, but there was only a hand full of people that could link up to me like that. "Which Alpha am I speaking to?" I sent back. "Neil, it's Neil. Logan is with the witches." Neil was the Alpha of the pack next to mine. He'd mated with Logan's first girlfriend and that had caused a few hiccups at the start, but he was an okay guy. Logan had been a lot busier than I'd first suspected if the other Alphas were involved too. "Logan isn't picking up the link. What's the situation like? How do you know about all of this?"
There was silence, just as I was about to try Logan again, Neil spoke back. "It's not good Dom. You'll need to get here pretty fast. Logan filled us in a few weeks ago, but we didn't imagine it being anything like this." Neither did I, I thought to myself. I hadn't wanted to believe that any of this was a reality, but here it was staring at me in the face. "Find Logan," I told Neil, "we'll be there as soon as we can. How are the packs?" I could hear the static again and I knew the connection was getting weak. The only world that came through, was the only one that mattered. It was a whisper, but it was there...
"Safe."
Okay good, now I could focus on what I needed to do to help. "You need to get back to the Rising Dawn pack." I told Malik. His wolf head snapped to mine, "I am your Beta, Alpha. I'm nothing but your shield and I won't be leaving you." I stopped running, my paws skidding in the snow as I slipped to a halt. "I am your Alpha Malik, you will do as I say and make sure the pack is safe." His head nudged against mine, his snout shoving into my face. "I will not leave your side Dom. You can't order that or me." I looked over at Emily, she'd stopped not far from us, her eyes were trained on the sky and I knew she must be worrying about her parents.
"I'm not arguing. I need you there." I warned him. He looked back to Emily, his thoughts matching mine. "She needs a shield too. She needs protecting." He argued. I couldn't fault the guy for trying. "I need you to go and see what the situation is back at home. By all means, join us when you're reported back, but before then I need you to go." His head shifted to look at the snow, it was a sign of respect, that he'd accepted my command. "If you die out there before I get to you..." he threatened, "I'll find you and kill you again." My head nudged his, "I'm parting with you because I trust you Malik. Have the same trust in me."
We held each other's gaze for a long time before his head twisted to the right and he sprinted off in the direction of my pack. Emily was still looking ahead, I didn't even know if she'd noticed Malik leaving. "We need to get there. I know you're worried about your parents. I promise we'll find them and keep them safe." Her furry head didn't move from the position it was in, but she nodded, leaping off in the direction of the horde from the skies. We didn't need words to communicate, I knew she would do what it took to keep them safe. But I would do whatever I needed to keep her safe too.
