Days turned to weeks, as Zack and I spent most of our time together. He'd wake me up at six every morning and we'd run around the small town of Goldy Pond. Many children lived there, but he told me that their numbers were actually dwindling. "We might have a new shipment of children soon. We have to destroy this place by then."In the control room Lucas showed me, we found a self destruct button. A lot of wiring was broken, but t was nothing Sonya and Oliver couldn't fix.
We visited the golden pond again, something inside me telling me to look a little further. Dried pools of blood stained the ground. "Gross," I thought to myself, tracing the red telephone. It was sitting on a peculiar brown drawer, a small hole in the center. Was the knob missing? What is this? My pinky barely fit, reminding me of another keyhole like mechanism I've seen. "The pen..." Zack and I whispered in unison. He laughed, patting my head. He always looked at me so warmly. I pulled the silver utensil from my pocket, gently pushing it into the drawer. When I turned it, a soft clicking echoed in the room.
A small faded piece of parchment was sitting alone. I picked it up, glancing at Zack. "Wanna find Emma?" He asked, touching my hand. I nodded, smiling as we made our way back up.
"Hey, Emma, can we talk?" I called, interrupting her game of poker with Pepe, Gillian and Nigel. "Full house, bitches!" The blond girl laughed, slamming down five cards. Her pink beanie bounced, a triumphant look on her face. Nigel, who wasn't wearing his hat, chuckled deeply. "Omae wa mou... Shindeiru!" He slammed down a straight flush of spades. Pepe and Emma grumbled, throwing down their mismash of pairs. She excused herself, turning to me. "What is it?" I pulled the letter from my pocket, flashing it at her. "From... Minerva?" She whispered, closing the door behind her. "Yeah." I replied, making my way back downstairs.
"Hello, this is William Minerva." I read aloud, leaning on the small house next to the telephone. "The banner of revolution is being raised. Together, we will destroy this twisted "Neverland" where children can never grow up."
"Ooh, edgy," Emma joked.
"Those of you who have made it Goldy Pond, my sanctuary, are probably looking for a safer world. A better world suited for human beings. It's my pleasure to tell you that a "Human World" exists."
The red head squeezed my hand. "We can get out!" She cheered, smiling at a silent Zack. He looked at me solemnly. "She's not done."
My mouth quivered, disappointment starting to set in. "It's in my greatest fear that this elevator has been deactivated. If Goldy Pond has been attacked, then it will not work. I'm sorry."
Emma opened her mouth, about to say something, but I shushed her.
"There are numerous other portals in this world. There is one underneath Grace Field Farm, where some of you may have escaped from. I'm sorry you have to return there. I wish we could have met. I would have loved all of you. Sincerely, William Minerva."
Another world... It does exist... And the portal is at Grace Field? This is okay! We can destroy Goldy Pond, storm Grace Field and go home! To the Human World!
Tears filled in Emma's eyes. She clenched her fists, smiling. "We can go home, Zack." I whispered, jumping into his arms.
Ray... Where are you? I wish you were here. You would've smiled after hearing that news. You would have brushed your stupid bangs away and smiled like an idiot. Maybe a witty comment like "Huh, so William Minerva finally told us something instead of leaving vague notes."
I miss you, Ray. Zack squeezed me tightly, letting guilt settle into my heart.
Why couldn't I stop thinking about Ray?
