Not a memory. A montage.
A woman with long black hair pulled into a bun was calling a name. "y/n!" She said, reaching out to me. For some reason, I couldn't see her eyes. She disappeared, blown away by the wind, into a bundle of dust. Those little gray bits reformed, creating a boy with white hair and a white suit. "y/n." He said that name gently, his left hand touching my cheek. And again, the person before me was recreated. A girl with wild orange hair, a boy with a striped headband. A man with strange white streaks across his jet black hair. They cycled, over and over again, each new person bringing me a sort of warmth. Perhaps this is heaven. It feels so nice. I felt an air of finality with this one. He was taller than me, wearing a light gray sweater and a cyan blue scarf. His unusually long bangs covered his left eye, the back spiky and messy. I wanted to reach out to him and pat it down. My mouth opened on it's own. "You should brush your hair, dummy." The boy chuckled, patting my head. "I thought you liked it when it's fluffy." My face felt warm, as I replied, "yeah, I do." "Say that when I ask you to marry me, y/n." The strange white world around me suddenly turned light pink. My heart skipped a beat. I grabbed ahold of my body, breaking free of the dreamlike trance. "Is that who I am? y/n?" He nodded, pulling his hand away. And then I woke up.
In the six months of snowstorm, I couldn't recall a single memory. I only had the ghosts in my dreams, but those disappeared whenever I woke up. The faces, their figures always got blurry when I was conscious. I took that name, y/n. And I lived my new life, with that old name. With that hole deep inside my chest.
Moving on was fairly easy, since I had no memories. The locket had also seemed to grow tired of waiting and stayed that dark, sad crimson for the next year and a half.
"Wow! I've never been in such a big town!" I laughed, jumping onto the stone plaza. Crowds of people walked along the brick streets, children holding lollipops, couples holding hands. It was so colorful. I turned to Grandpa, who was scanning the list of groceries. "Can I look around?" He nodded an okay, "Be at the train station in an hour. We don't wanna miss it." I hugged him before trotting off to explore this new place.
Maybe I'll get a new book? Maybe I'll get a new mug? Yep, definitely a mug. A sudden gush of wind blew my hair away so I pulled on my hoodie. Brr... I walked into a cute silverware shop and gasped at the vast array of mugs around me. I might have a mug fetish. "Ooh, pink." I whispered to myself, reaching for the pastel blush cup on the top shelf. It was right out of my grasp, my tiny legs refusing to stretch any farther. "Need some help?" A voice chuckled from behind me, a hand grabbing it's handle. He placed it in my palms. "Thank you!" I smiled, holding it tightly. He continued the conversation, choosing his own baby blue cup. "I thought only old people and parents would come to a dinnerware shop." "That makes two of us," I laughed, nudging his shoulder. "But I might be sexually attracted to big cups." He smiled, his left eye covered by his long black bangs. "I'm here for a less weird reason, you... you weirdo." I laughed again. "Hey, don't judge me! So are you a boomer or a teen dad?" "I'm twenty one." He replied, placing the mug back down. He instead took the same light pink one I chose. "Someone I really like really likes mugs." Ooh, maybe we could be friends. She seems like someone I would get along with. "Where is this lucky girl?" I giggled, picking up another cup, bright red like the feeling in my chest. "She- She's on a trip somewhere. But when she comes home, I want it to be ready for her. And get her these weird mugs she loves so much." I was only half listening, as for the first time in almost two years, my necklace was starting to glow. I quickly placed the cups back down, pulling off my hoodie. I brought my hands to my neck, unclipping the jewel. "Are you okay?" He asked, peering over my shoulder. I heard a sharp gasp escape from his mouth.
His voice was low, scared, but excited and surprised. "y- y/n?"
My name? He knew my name? I turned to him, his dark gray eyes immediately meeting mine. It hit me like a truck. That hole, that emptiness that had left me broken since the day I woke up suddenly felt filled. Was this where I was supposed to be? Was this who I was supposed to find? Tears were already running down his face, those silver eyes wet with tears, staring at me in disbelief. His hands shook, taking a small little photograph out of his pocket. It was... A really bad picture of me. "Do you remember this? Do you remember me?" A drop of water fell onto my hands. I was crying too. I wanted to remember. I wanted to know who this person was. Because I felt like I'd been waiting for him forever. "Can- Can you help me? Help me remember?" He nodded his head, suddenly pulling me into his arms. His chest was warm. His heart was beating incredibly fast. I knew that this was my place. In his arms. "Ray."
"What?" He asked, pulling himself away. I don't even know myself. The name escaped my lips without me even noticing. I had pulled the locket into my hands, my palms stinging with a wound. The pattern of the necklace was burned into my hand, the thing glowing like a fire. Something in his head seemed to click. He grabbed my hand and pulled me outside. "W- Where are we going?" I called, trying to keep up with his long strides. He ignored my question, ideas and thoughts probably racing through his head. "You're too slow, dummy!" He replied, laughing. He slowed down, grabbing my waist. I blushed furiously. "W- What are yo-!" The boy hauled me into his arms, carrying me bridal style. He was also tinted pink. "My name is Ray! And I love you!"
I felt like... I was waiting this whole time to hear those words.
