A vibration in Dick's pocket drew his attention to his phone, where a code blinked. It took him less than a second to recognize the code from Jason's distress signal and be on his way out his apartment door. He followed the tracking software until he arrived at a burning building... Jason's apartment.
There were groups of soot-covered people huddled together, coughing and crying as they realized they were now homeless.
Dick's head whipped around as he frantically searched for Jason, but he was nowhere to be found.
Sirens sounded far away as the fire trucks and ambulances sped over from across town.
The building shuddered as the windows exploded, letting out jets of flame that streaked high into the sky.
Dick's heart nearly stopped when he saw Jason lowering a child out of a window on the third story on a rope of wet bedsheets and curtains. Jason was still in the building.
A sense of panic made its way into Dick's heart as he watched the child, a little girl, being lowered down, only for her to let out a small shriek as she fell about two feet into the arms of a worried looking man.
Dick's breath caught in his throat as he watched Jason's form stumble and fall as the rope of sheets fell to the ground.
The fire trucks were still minutes away. 'They're not going to make it in time,' Dick realized. He stood there for a moment, eyes wide with terror, but before he knew it, he was running toward the fire escape of the burning building, the only thoughts in his mind thoughts of Jason.
—
"Jason!" Dick called between coughs as he searched through the building, his clothes steaming from the water he'd quickly soaked himself in.
Dick found his fiancé's body lying next to the window he'd lowered the little girl down from.
"Jason," Dick nearly sobbed in relief. "Jason, wake up," he said, shaking the man's shoulder.
A groan escaped Jason's lips as he opened his eyes. "Dickie?" he asked confusedly.
"We need to get out of here," Dick said, pulling Jason to his feet and rushing to the room in the apartment that had a fire escape in it.
Jason was a few steps behind Dick, and as they ran, a cracking noise got Dick's attention.
Dick looked over his shoulder to see a white-hot beam falling through the ceiling of the room in a burning, flaming, inferno.
Jason was hunched over in a coughing fit, oblivious to the beam falling towards him.
Dick didn't think twice before he dove towards Jason, shoving him out of the way of the beam. He screamed in agony as the beam burned through his shoe and seared the skin of his left foot that was now trapped underneath it. He desperately reached for Jason, but his fiancé rolled from the force of his shove and fell through a hole in the floor.
—
Jason hit the ground with a thud, quickly jumping up and rushing toward the window. His thoughts cleared slightly as he breathed in the less smoky air in the room. He climbed out onto the fire escape as quickly as he could, and made his way up it to the floor above.
Dick was unconscious, and fire from the beam trapping his foot was spreading up his pants leg.
Jason quickly tried to put it out, frantically trying to think of a way to get Dick out from under the beam.
"Dick!" he called, shaking the acrobat's shoulder.
Blue eyes blinked up at him drowsily. "Jay?" Dick asked, mind clouded from all the smoke he'd inhaled.
"Dickie," Jason said, "I'm going to lift this beam, and I need you to pull your leg toward you when I say so, ok?"
Dick nodded in agreement.
Jason grit his teeth. This was going to hurt. He readied himself for the pain that was about to come before pushing his shoulder up underneath the beam and lifting it off of Dick's leg. He screamed as the fire burned through layers of his clothing. "NOW!" he shouted, dropping the beam and falling backwards once Dick had gotten his leg free.
Dick's vision was rapidly tunneling as the smoke inhalation got the better of him again, but with his last bit of strength he reached out and grasped Jason's hand.
Jason scooted himself over to Dick, trying to ignore the burning in his shoulder. He looked down into Dick's beautiful eyes, a tear slipping down his cheek as he realized these could be their last few moments together before they died.
Dick stared into Jason's eyes before placing a hand on the back of Jason's head and gently bringing him closer until their lips met in a sweet kiss.
"I love you," Dick whispered in Jason's ear. If he was going to die, those wanted to be the last words he said.
"I love you too," Jason echoed, laying next to Dick in the fiery inferno that the room had become.
Before his vision faded completely to black, Jason caught a glimpse of a reflective uniform. Firefighters. They had found them, there was hope.
