aesthetic_satanspawn surely I wouldn't leave last chapter's storyline unfinished... or maybe I would
Dick leaned against the trunk of a tree, his knees tucked up to his chest as he sat on one of the tree's lower branches. He trembled in the breeze, wishing he'd thought to bring a coat instead of the simple domino mask and black cloak he'd pulled from the props closet.
The fog clouding his mind had lifted slightly... not as much as he'd like, but when did anything ever go as he wanted?
He watched the team as they crouched near a group of warehouses.
Superboy pointed one out and they all proceeded to move toward it.
Dick's flipped off the tree branch, steadying himself for a moment before he crept after the teen heroes. He followed them through an open window and hid in the rafters, hoping Superboy would be too overwhelmed by the noise everyone else was making to notice an extra heartbeat.
A man dressed in all black moved through the warehouse below them. Something about the way he moved seemed familiar to Dick. He must've met this man before...
Before he could think about it much longer, Artemis called down from the rafters and everything started to fall apart.
Time seemed to jump, a lit flare suddenly in the man's hand. He blew, the flames fanning up and out toward them.
Dick tried to jump out of the way, the sudden heat leaving him dazed.
"Those crates are full of live ammo!" Roy shouted, but to Dick that seemed a million miles away.
A fiery boom echoed through the night.
Dick was unaware that he'd fallen from the rafters until he hit the ground, rubble from the burning warehouse burying him and the team.
Connor burst from the rubble, throwing the chunk of roof that had been covering most of the team to the side with a feral growl.
Dick pushed himself to his feet, noticing that one of the team's members, the Martian girl, hadn't gotten back to her feet. He pushed the burning rubble out of the way to kneel at her side.
"That guy's dead meat," Connor growled, stomping forward.
"Superboy no!" Dick shouted before he thought better of it. "You need to get her out," he added, nodding his head to the Martian he was currently supporting.
"The thief's getting away," Connor huffed, glaring at Dick as if to dare him to do or say anything else.
The other heroes had similar looks, both of them pointing various weapons in his direction.
"And that's more important than her life? The fire's killing her," he said, challenging the super with a glare of his own.
"Right... right," Connor mumbled, stepping forward to take M'gann's weight from Dick's shoulders.
"Y-you two... find the... the thief," Dick mumbled, stumbling and falling to his knees.
"Because he matters more than you?" Artemis asked, slinging one of Dick's arms over her shoulder.
"We're getting you out too," Roy confirmed, supporting Dick's other side.
—
Dick was surprised to find himself back in the train car of the other Daring Dangers when he woke up. He might've thought the whole thing was a fever dream if it weren't for the burning heat crawling over the skin of his arms and face. He must've been too close to the fire.
