Whumptober day 16: necrosis
Comment which (if any) stories you'd like a part 2 to here so I can remember them all!
Bruce banged his head onto his desk over and over. Of course this would happen.
"You alright in there B?" Dick asked, poking his head into the man's office.
"No," Bruce mumbled, his face squished against the desk.
Dick tried not to laugh at the childishness of his mentor.
"Have you ever been to Indonesia?" Bruce suddenly asked.
"No..." Dick replied after a long moment.
"How old are you?" Bruce continued.
That question stung. Weren't parents supposed to remember things like that?
"22," Dick mumbled.
"Perfect, you can go to Indonesia for my business meeting then," Bruce said.
"What?" Dick asked after a moment.
"One of Wayne tech's partners invited us to send a representative to stay at their resort for a weekend while we meet to discuss a welfare project. I've gotten a tip about a mass breakout in the planning at Arkham, so I'll have to stay here to make sure everything's kept under control," Bruce replied.
"Can't you send someone else? I have things I need to do," Dick tried to argue.
Bruce gave him a look like he was an annoying child complaining about having to go to school. "It has to be a direct representative. Lucious is busy with a friend's funeral, and Jason isn't old enough... or stable enough to be honest," he said.
"There has to be someone else you can send," Dick insisted.
Bruce finally turned to look at his son face on. "Stop acting like a child Dick. It'll just be one meeting and a few days in a nice hotel. You should be grateful for the opportunity."
Dick clenched his jaw, knowing that if he continued to argue it would only end in a yelling match and a temporary ban from the manor, something he'd experienced too many times to want to relive.
"Fine," he ground out. Mentally berating himself for not holding his ground. Another part of himself wondered what the point was in even trying to set boundaries when he knew it would take a miracle for Bruce to actually respect them.
—
Dick sat with his legs dangling in the resort's pool, watching in slight amusement as Jason tried to teach the parrots how to swear.
He'd enjoyed himself thus far, despite being determined not to. Spending time with Jason was refreshing, almost like a reset in a way.
Dick laid back on the edge of the pool, closing his eyes and stretching. He listened to the chorus of noise around him, birds chirping in the trees, the wind rustling the leaves and grasses. He opened his eyes as the noise suddenly quieted. A tremor ran through the ground, shaking the trees. Another tremor followed, this one stronger than the first.
Dick's jumped to his feet, scanning the horizon for some sign of danger. His eyes widened as they caught on the horizon.
A giant wall of water hung in the sky as if suspended there.
"Jason!" Dick shouted, catching his brother's fear filled eyes. He ran toward him, determined to keep him safe.
But he never reached him.
—
Everything was cold and dark when Dick opened his eyes.
Stars painted the sky like a canvas, even more breathtaking with the lack of light from the destroyed city.
