Whumptober day 7: only for emergencies

AlinaPetrosyan7 this one's for you :) At least I think this was your request 😅

64, Dick tallied as he knocked another man to the ground with a roundhouse kick to the skull. He glanced around to check on Tim and Jason, a habit he couldn't seem to shake... not that he'd want to.

He did a double take this time however when his gaze caught on Damian. The young Robin was fighting in the midst of them, his customary katana replaced by a simple bo staff for the night... luckily.

Dick fought his way to the boy's side, ending up back to back with the ex assassin. "Robin? Why are you here?" He asked, sending another man to the ground with a blow from his escrima sticks.

"You needed help," the boy stubbornly insisted.

Dick forced himself to pause and think for a better response when his first instinct was to snap at the boy. "Keeping watch over the city was an important job Damian, we would've called if we needed help," he said.

"By then it would've been too late. If someone had managed to take down you three fools it's likely they would've overwhelmed me if I came to rescue you on my own," Damian replied, stubbornly continuing to believe he was in the right.

"You know you don't have to prove anything to us... to me," Dick said, quietly enough that only Damian could hear him.

Damian paused, freezing up for a moment.

Dick wanted to keep talking, but the fighting drew them in separate directions. Man after man fell, and soon, most of the thugs turned tail and ran.

"Robin! Go after them!" Tim shouted, pushing against the man who had him pinned to the wall by his own bo staff.

Dick glanced Damian's way, not surprised that he hadn't listened to what Tim had said. His eyes snapped back to the boy when he saw who he was fighting... a sinking feeling rose inside of him. This was supposed to be a routine drugs bust... this wasn't even one of the big gangs... why did they have weapons like that?

He ran toward his brother's side, shoving past anyone who stepped in his path. He pushed himself to go faster, watching as a man with greasy black hair and a crooked smile aimed a strange looking gun at his brother.

"Robin! Look out!" He shouted, diving in front of his brother, his arms wrapping around the younger boy to protect him.

Dick rolled, watching as the rest of the men ran the same way the others had, his mind seeming to disconnect from his body for a moment.

"Robin!" Jason yelled, glaring at Damian as he rushed to Dick's side. "What were you thinking?!"

"I... I was helping... I... I just wanted to prove that... that I could do it... that I'm useful," Damian mumbled.

"You really are selfish aren't you," Jason spat. "Look at what happened to Wing because you thought you could do it all on your own."

Damian shrunk back. "Sorry," he mumbled.

"-s okay," Dick said, pushing himself unsteadily off the floor. "I'm... fine."

Jason glared at Damian as he helped Dick to his feet.

Dick made it a few steps before he fell to his knees, clutching his stomach.

"Wing?" Tim asked tentatively.

Dick groaned in pain, curling in on himself. He fell forward, catching himself on shaking arms, his body trembling as he vomited up blood.

Jason caught the elder as he fell to the side. "Call B right now," he ordered, looking Tim directly in the eye.
