the ball was less than a week away.

it seemed to become a tradition for briar to get her dress very late.

but also she didn't want to overexcite herself with having a dress too early and just have it collect dust in the back of her closet.

briar was third wheeling heavily.

ginny and luna would subtly be all cutesy with each other and show tiny bits of pda.

the most they would do was hold hands. but briar and then knew that their 'friendly' little manners towards the other was more than friendly.

briar was walking along side the couple as they saw harry and ron a few feet away from them.

they seemed to be doing their shopping late too.

ginny suggested going to say hello.

as ginny called their names to get their attention, they walked over to them.

ever since the kiss at the party briar would feel awkward in the first few minutes of seeing and talking to ron.

she wanted to run in the other direction and just shove the feelings deep down.

once they were in talking range of each other ron smiled at her, the way he always does, his little half smirk kinda thing that immediately made butterflies erupt in her stomach.

briar just blushed and smiled at the ground, not wanting everyone to see her be so vulnerable.

she looked up at harry.

his hair was slicked back slightly, naturally, still pretty messy though. the light brown highlights in his hair were on display from the sun.

he hastily ran a hand through his hair as he nodded to something luna had said.

it felt as though it was all in slow motion.

watching him smile and let out a chuckle.

she couldn't help but wonder what cedric would be doing right now if he were still alive.

before she could dwell too much longer on the thought, ginny had caught her attention.

"...well we better get going, this one here," she laughed as she shook briar's shoulders, "made us wait till last minute to get dresses."

"yeah, so did ron." harry rolled his eyes.

ron looked over at his best friend with a disgusted face, "you said you wanted to come when the girls were-"

"well!" harry said loudly, cutting off ron, "we have some butterbeers waiting for us."

he pulled ron along after he turned back and looked at them, well just one of them, "bye ginny."

she couldn't help but blush slightly. her childhood crush on him was one that continued to linger, but she loved luna more than harry right now.

"come on," ginny said, quickly shrugging off what just happened, "we have some dress shopping to do."

briar stole one last glance back at them.

it was eerie how similar she could see cedric in him.

~

ginny and luna had already found their dresses.

briar was more picky with her choices.

it felt as though she had tried on, and looked at every single dress in the whole store.

she compared herself to skittles after trying on what seemed like every color dress of the rainbow.

when luna and ginny didn't get the joke she waved herself away mumbling, 'nevermind...'

she was getting more and more on edge as the time passed.

it seemed like ginny was also because luna had to calm her down when she would grumble, 'just pick one already' under her breath.

luna got up and walked over to one of the workers, "do you possibly have any other dresses?"

it was hard to get upset with luna when she spoke in her dream like voice.

the lady hesitated at first, causing luna to point over to an upset briar, "she can't seem to find the one, i'm sorry."

the woman nodded as she walked into a door leading to the back, obviously a room only for workers.

it had been a few minutes until the lady came back and tapped briar on the shoulder.

she handed briar a stack of dresses impatiently.

briar mumbled a 'thank you' and went back into the changing room.

she had tried on and went through every dress in the pile.

very annoyed with her bad luck she peeked her head out to see if luna and ginny were still there, to her surprise, they were.

ginny was snoring on luna's lap as she looked through a wizard fashion magazine upside down.

"maybe we should just come back another day." briar called out in between the curtain.

luna nodded, "possibly."

obviously not wanting that response, briar shut the curtain and turned back to the pile of dresses.

she was about to discard them all until she spotted one that she must have skimmed over during her little fashion show for herself.

she slowly put it on, trying her best not to mess it up.

once it was fully on, she looked in the mirror and smiled to herself.

she hated to seem like she was overly confident, often knocking herself down a few pegs when she felt she was being too generous to herself.

but, she was a vision.

she stepped out from the dressing room, gaining luna's attention.

"you look lovely briar."

ginny stirred when luna spoke.

she opened her eyes slowly.

once her eyes focused on briar they widened, "merlin, my brother is gonna be very lucky."

luna nodded in agreement at ginny's comment.

briar scoffed playfully before turning back to go into the dressing room, giving her thanks as she closed the curtain to change back into her regular clothes.

i literally am in love with the dress that briar is gonna wear, i kinda wanna wear it for my prom tbh
