The message flashed across the screen as he held the phone in his hand. Heart racing, he pressed it. Reading the words over and over, he tried to fight the anger away. And why was he the one handling the situation? Okay, maybe he was the best option for this, but that didn't make him feel any better.
Replying, he tucked the phone into the pocket of his slacks. Turning his head, he watched as the woman he loved brushed her hair. Nerves itched throughout his body as he fought the urge to embrace her. Things had been tense since he arrived this morning. The phone call he received last night had put his emotions into a scattered state.
Approaching the hospital bed, he slid his hands into his pockets to keep from reaching for her. "What is it, gorgeous?"
Onyx eyes watched as her back tensed for a moment. Her hand stilled in the action of brushing. Dropping her hand, she set the brush on the bed beside her. "That's a loaded question, Shisui." Her voice was soft, laced with a trace of taunting.
"Okay," he chuckled lightly, "What are you thinking about?"
Shaking her head, Shisui watched as her hair swayed, "Still a loaded question," she joked, "but mostly, I'm thinking about what I should do."
"Now that's a loaded answer," Y/n turned to look over her shoulder as Shisui continued, "we do what we always do, persevere."
Shisui watched as she dropped her gaze for a moment. A sad smile danced on her lips as she said, "When did you stop being the flirt and turn into a gentleman?" She meant it as a joke, but Shisui's answer left her stunned.
"When I realized I'd never have you," Y/n's head snapped back up as she gasped softly. "I'm sorry, gorgeous, but I don't think I can handle being around you without being honest. Seeing you- almost losing you-"
"Ms. Uchiha, oh," Shisui turned when he heard the woman's voice as the door opened. The woman's green eyes narrowed, "No visitors."
Y/n stood slowly as she said, "It's okay, Vivekka," the nurse looked past Shisui, "he's family."
Fighting the grimace away, Shisui extended his hand out as Vivekka approached, "Nice to meet you, Vivekka," she glanced at his hand, "I'm Shisui."
The nurse let her eyes dance over Shisui as she accepted his hand, "You too," she let go and straightened. "You didn't check-in at the desk." Her tone was accusatory.
Lifting his brows slightly, Shisui said, "There wasn't anyone there when I arrived," his dark eyes dipped to take in her appearance. Her hair was a silvery-white, obviously dyed. She wore a pair of red scrubs, making her eyes brighter. "I would've remembered seeing you at the desk."
Y/n chewed her lips to keep from giggling. She had just commented on Shisui's flirtatious attitude missing, and here he was making the poor woman before him blush madly. Trying to save the woman, Y/n asked, "Did you need something, Vivekka?"
Straightening, Vivekka brushed by Shisui to walk closer to Y/n, "Shizune wanted me to retake your vitals," the nurse settled her hands on Y/n's shoulders. Then, gently pushing Y/n to sit, she said, "And you're supposed to still be in bed. Obito went to get you some clothes."
"I had a miscarriage, not a spinal injury," Y/n scoffed, "I'm-"
"You're not fine," the woman snapped, "listen to your care team for once, please." Vivekka moved to take the blood pressure cuff off the wall. Wrapping it around Y/n's arm, she sighed heavily, "Even after you had Tsuki, you were up moving too soon."
Looking up at Vivekka, Y/n said, "You're the one that told me I needed to be walking to prevent blood clots."
Vivekka gave Y/n a deadpanned look, "Not ten minutes after pushing a child out of your body." Then, lifting the stethoscope from her neck, she settled the earpieces into place. "And quit looking at me like a lost puppy. You're going home as soon as your husband returns."
