A/n: sometimes I start writing a oneshot and halfway go "damn I'm projecting too much of my own trauma into this one" and that's what happened here so I back pleaded a bit and changed some stuff so if something seems a bit jarring or out of place then that's why oops-

Sometimes you just get bad vibes from someone. There's not really a way to describe it, but there's something about them that's... off. Gut feeling tells you not to even try and get into it, and to just stay away.

That's how you felt about Light.

Something about him... it scared you. It made you uncomfortable. You didn't really know why but you didn't like him. Maybe it was the fact L thought he was Kira and it really looked to be true, maybe it was the fact Light was almost coddled by the taskforce and he got away with everything. Something gave you sketch vibes and you didn't like it. You didn't like him.

So sometimes you found yourself almost hiding behind L. L was the only sane one here who seemed to be able to see past Lights facade, so you trusted him more than anyone else. Put it this way, you'd trust L with your drink at a bar but you wouldn't even get near Light with your drink.

There seemed to be an unspoken alliance with you and L, he could tell Light made you uncomfortable and allowed you to use him as a shield of sorts. And you were the only one that saw his side if things and actually believed him. It may be unspoken but it was definitely a bond you both knew about.

So even though your conversations had been nothing but work related up until this point, you know L was a safe person to run to if you had to.

And you had to right now...

L jumped when he heard the door behind him open, followed by angry yelling.

"You can't just accuse me of being a serial killer and walk away (y/n)! You're as bad as L"

Oh no, here we go again.

"Light just drop it. It was a joke" you said.

"Yeah well the 'jokes' you and L tell aren't very fucking funny. I'm sick and tired of everyone calling me Kira like I don't have feelings" Light scoffed.

"You don't! You gave anger and grandiosity and that's it. The fact you get offended over a joke THAT small tells me you have no idea what humour and fun is. And don't act like the taskforce don't practically suck your dick they protect you so much. Look Light I'm done with your temper and inability to understand when someone isn't serious. Just shut up and leave me alone"

In these situations, usually someone would storm out of the room in anger. But you knew Light would try and follow you to keep bitching since he just never stopped talking, so instead you looked at L and gave him the 'help me' look.

You walked in here for that reason. L knew it too. You were a strong person who could defend themselves, L had seen you throw a punch before and it looked painful to say the least. He knew that you didn't need to be coddled. But this was a different situation. Something about Light made you so uncomfortable that you felt defenceless, and turned to L for help.

Any other fight L would leave you be, knowing you'd win it. But one with Light? He wouldn't let him touch you.

"Ok can we not argue over petty jokes for once? We're solving a case here not acting for a reality TV show" L spoke up.

"Yeah well if we were solving a case you'd be looking at ACUTAL suspects and not me. Plus I don't think insensitive 'jokes' count as work" Light snapped.

"You don't have any sense of humour do you? Jokes about tough situations can lighten the mood, I'm horrible at social cues and even I know that"

Light took a step toward you as he ranted, prompting you to take a step back closer to L who silently did the 'mum seatbelt' motion and held his arm protectively in front of you.
