You didn't know how long you'd been sitting out on the beach chairs talking to this guy you'd just met. But you were invested. Having gone through two bottles of ice cold cola each, talking copious amounts of shit about the people in the building and suggesting each other good books and movies.
This Ryuzaki... there was something about him.
It'd been long enough that most of the people inside had gone home, and your parents running the restaurant started to clean up and wrap the night up. And yet you and Ryuzaki were still lost in conversation, sitting in awkward positions you somehow found comfortable on the beach chairs and listening to the waves crash.
"Speaking of Japanese movies, your name is Japanese right? You ever been to Japan?" You asked.
"Yeah, a few times. It's really nice, and everyone is pretty introverted and keeps to themselves so you're not really gonna have any awkward encounters with strangers" He replied.
"Man I've always wanted to go, costs a fortune though"
"Air travel is getting stupid expensive nowadays I'll give you that"
He seemed to have gone all over the world, read every book, seem every movie, taken a class on every topic. Was there anything this guy didn't know? He was some kind of mad genius. It was so interesting.
"You're hella interesting dude, it's like you've seen everything and been everywhere" you complimented.
"I guess it's just my job, it takes me around the world and you see all kind of things when you travel. Although you seem more interesting to me" he replied.
"Me? The 20 year old that still lives with their parents?"
There was something about a calm life L liked. While he lived for the thrill of being a detective and getting to travel all over the place, he did long for a place to call home and a quiet life every now and then. While wammys would always be his childhood home, he wondered what it was like to grow up with parents in a nice house and a group of friends and a normal school experience.
"You live by the beach, have a family restaurant, spend your time reading books on the balcony and lounging around on beaches. It seems so peaceful" he said.
"I suppose it is pretty peaceful, but it's nothing special" you replied.
"It doesn't have to be. As long as it's stable, it makes you happy and you have something to do, that's all you need in life"
Who was this man? Smart, seemingly rich, been all over the world AND valued happiness and comfort over everything else? It was like the gods crafted the perfect man and put him on the beach chair next to you. He even looked super cute! Those eyebags just gave him an odd charm.
"You're something Ryuzaki... I like you" you smiled.
"You do? That's new" he replied.
"What do you mean? Surely you have friends"
"Not really, I've never had the time to socialise outside a work setting"
"Well if you're gonna be around the area long enough to hang out from time to time, then consider me your friend"
So... this is what making friends was like. Finding someone by chance and connecting so quickly and deeply it was like two magnets drawn to one another.
"Well, once I'm done with this uh... work matter. I'll be around for a while, what mishaps do friends usually get into?" He asked.
"Oh it's mishaps you want huh? Lots of mishaps can happen when you live by the beach. We can be good children and go rollerskating, surfing, or shopping. Or we can be mischievous and jump the fence to the closed off part of the beach and camp, we can wait until it's dark and skinny dip, we can leave chips on the cars of assholes so seagulls flock it to and scratch the paint up" you smirked.
L may be a detective who upheld the law, but he wasn't immune to a bit of mischief here and there. He liked your vibe, the cheeky look in your eye when you suggested something that wasn't really illegal but definitely against the unwritten rules.
"Sounds fun, I'm in" he smiled.
"How about we start by sneaking you into my room?" You teased.
"Don't tell me you're 20 and your parents are still saying no boys"
"Oh they probably won't care if I was meeting with you in the day for lunch or something. But sneaking a boy they've never met into my room? I might get a little scolding if I was caught"
Maybe it was the fact he never got to be rebellious and rowdy as a teenager because he was off solving cases, but it seemed so fun. He was in.
"Alright. Sounds fun"
"I knew you'd say yes. It's almost closing time so we're heading back soon. My place is that one there with the blue roof, my room is the window right at the top" you pointed out across the street.
"Meet you there?"
"Meet you there"
The story of how you met L was a wild one. Talking on a beach while he was meant for he undercover all night, sneaking him into your room where you continued to talk and ended up falling asleep. Him waking up the next morning in someone else's bed and realising he was meant to be home hours ago. Exchanging numbers and talking more and more from there.
When you found out he was actually L, it was a similar wild story. One where you accidentally got looped onto one of his cases.
And when you finally kissed him, it was while you were accidentally locked in the local ice cream shop overnight.
But all these years later, and many many more strange stories added to the list, and you were still together and as close as ever.
The taskforce you'd ended up on to catch Kira had no idea how far back you and L went, or how close you really were. There was almost a thrill to hiding your relationship and sneaking into each others rooms at night, it reminded you of that first night you met when you snuck him into your room behind your parents backs.
