A/n: a follow up to not so binary for my enby bitches who simp for L like me. More of a L being wholesome and trying his best to be an ally to the gender less folk out there kinda thing. Also reminder to binder wearers to do your stretches.
Working on the Kira team wasn't anything like you thought. You were under the impression it'd be all strictly professional and a tough love type environment. But with such a small team, and most people knowing each other for years before Kira it made things seem oddly casual given the situation. Didn't help that L was the leader of all this, he had some strange methods.
So here you were in your pyjamas sitting at your desk, very annoyed and fixing a fault in the computer system. Whoever set this all up before you got here clearly didn't know what they were doing, this system was a mess. It was rather silent aside from tapping of keyboards and occasional clink of a coffee mug. Everyone was tired and just wanted to get the days work over with to go to sleep. It was already pretty late.
On the opposite side of the desk L had his desk, and was blankly starring at his screen trying to figure something out. Every so often he'd reach over to the platter of cakes and cookies and take one. You'd taken a few too, he didn't seem to mind. You just really liked the bunny shaped cream puffs and couldn't help yourself.
Matsuda rolled over on his office chair and handed a stack of envelopes to L.
"Here's todays mail, doesn't seem to be anything case related just the usual" he said.
"Thanks, I'll look through it in a minute" L replied, taking them and barely paying attention to them.
He quickly flipped through the stack and took one out, sliding it over to you.
"This one's for you" he said.
You turned away from your screen and looked at the envelope, at first you didn't even know what it could be, but when you saw the name of your doctor on it, you perked up and quickly opened it.
Could it be?
Practically tearing the letter from the envelope you unfolded it and scanned it down, looking for one particular sentence. About midway through the letter you found it, and all the anticipation you'd been holding in for months finally bubbled over.
"Holy shit- holy SHIT!" You smiled, continuing to read it.
L looked up, your excitement catching his attention.
"No way... they moved me up the waiting list? I can get it by the end of the year?"
L already had a hunch on what the letter was, he knew the whole taskforces medical records and he was fully aware you'd been in a waiting list for reassignment surgery since he'd given you the work covered insurance for it when you started here. There were only a few months left of the year too, so from your excitement it seems you'd gotten lucky with that waiting list.
"L I need the 13th of November off and I will not take no for an answer" you spoke up, a massive smile plastered across your face.
"Don't worry, you can take the few weeks after that off too. You need to recover too" he replied.
There was no way you could just get a whole surgery and then come back to work the next day, L knew that. So even if you were the best worker here, he'd manage having you gone for a few weeks. Especially since this meant so much to you.
"Really? Thank you. You're the best" you thanked.
"I don't expect you to be back at work the scene you come out of surgery" L replied.
By now the conversation has gotten the attention of the rest of the taskforce, including Light and Misa. While they were all aware of your identity, some were more supportive than others. Some understood it better, some where a bit behind the times. And while no one had said anything outright against you, you did get the vibe from a few of them they didn't really understand or agree with you being outside the box.
