You were a crafty person. You liked to make things and put them to use, it was fun and practical. You made most of your clothes yourself as well as your bed settings and other household items. After years of doing so you tend to accumulate enough fabrics and wools to whip up something in a day.
It was a good past time, a useful skill to have and made making presents for peoples birthdays easy.
As the nights got colder, and the taskforce were up later the building got rather chilly so you began to carry around a patchwork blanket you'd made for yourself years ago to keep warm. Eventually one by one the taskforce were asking for you to knit them mittens, scarfs and sew them coats for the cold weather. You agreed of course, because you'd take any chance to make something. It was fun to you, and you liked to add little personalised details to the things you made. Like when Misa asked for a beanie from you so you sewed in little bat wings to fit her style.
There was one person who hadn't jumped onto the trend of your homemade goods yet and that was L, he was so focused on the case and deep into his work he hadn't even noticed the change in temperature.
He may not have consciously noticed it, but his body absolutely did. Every time you came over to give him case work you notice him shiver, his hands worked be cold and the heater didn't seem to do much for him. Probably the lack of iron in his body really.
This would absolutely not fly with you, you couldn't have your favourite detective freezing half to death while working now can we? So one night you dug through all your fabrics for patterns that fit L, like strawberries and cakes, frogs and pandas, Halloween and night time prints. And slowly you made up a collection of squares to sew together into one big patchwork quilt for him.
If he was going to refuse to put on socks and a coat he could at least have a blanket to wrap up in.
Over the course of a few nights you sewed all the squares together, adding some lining and fleece to the back and hemmed off the whole thing creating one big, warm, very L quilt. On the back you added a patch with a little 'from (y/n)' on it as you did whenever you made something for someone. And when you'd finished you only had a few scraps left you tossed into your scrap box to make into something else one day.
Finally you had the finished quilt, all done and ready to gift.
But when you went down to the main room to give it to him, you for the first time ever since knowing him, found him asleep. Yes, L was actually asleep. Seems like he'd finally tired himself out.
"You know, sleeping on the desk is probably why your back is always so sore..." you sighed.
Carefully, you pulled him from the chair and let him go limp on the sofa. At least that way he can sleep spread out and not hurt his back. You grabbed the nearest pillow and and rested his head on it, and tossed your quilt for him over the top. Tucking him in, you shook your head and playfully sighed.
"For the world's greatest detective you're a damn child sometimes L"
It was already late enough, so you left him to sleep and went to sleep yourself. You could explain the blanket tomorrow when he was awake.
Early that next morning, the morning chill was what woke L up. He was warm, expect for the arm that was hanging off the sofa and sticking out of the blanket. Half asleep he pulled his cold arm back in and rolled over to snuggle into the warmth more. It took him a moment of waking up to realise he wasn't on the desk where he'd fallen asleep, and that he was wrapped up in something.
When he opened his eyes and sat up, taking a second to process he was met with a big, thick quilt nice and warm wrapped around him.
Each patch was something he liked. Strawberries, cakes, frogs, Halloween and other interests of his and colours he liked. He'd never seen the blanket before but did recognise the style of sewing. This was your handiwork.
Looking at the patch with your name on it proved his suspicions and he was a little surprised that you'd made him a whole blanket without him even asking. Just to be nice and out of the goodness of your heart you'd made it for him.
Wrapping up in the blanket to shield himself from the cold, he got up and walked up the stairs into Wataris office. He was already awake and starting work for the day.
"Ah you're awake. You actually slept for once" he joked.
"Dad what does it mean when someone gives you a gift for no reason?" He asked.
"What? Why?"
L held up the blanket to show him, Watari couldn't help but chuckle at L's naivety and your kindness.
"Ah that's (y/n)a work I see. Lots of strawberries and rain clouds definitely very you" he replied.
"They just... kinda left it for me? They must have been the one that moved me from the desk to the sofa too. But why? I didn't ask for- not that I don't like it but-"
"L"
He looked up from his confused rambling and wrapped the blanket around him again to keep warm.
"They just like you. People don't need a reason to give gifts if they just like the person and want to spoil them" Watari explained.
"They like me? But none of the taskforce really like me, they just tolerate me for the case" L replied.
"Well clearly they like you. You're holding a handmade, personalised blanket from them after all"
L was silent for a moment, but the physical warmth from the blanket and emotional warmth from your kindness and actually having someone be nice to him and like him made him smile.
"Huh... never thought something like that would happen" he said.
"L I know you're not the best a relationships and emotions. I mean who would be after everything that happened to you, but trust me they like you and we're clearly worried about you getting cold now it's rather chilly at night" Watari replied.
L thought for a moment again, he felt like he needed to thank you. And the words weren't exactly enough. He'd never been liked, let alone given a gift by someone that wasn't his foster father before. So this was a pretty big deal to him.
"Dad do you know how to knit?" He asked.
"Some basics, why?"
"Teach me"
He already saw where this was going.
"Wanna make something in return huh?" Watari asked.
"Well... they like those funny hats with the cat ears and stuff so maybe I can make them a beanie or something..."
Watari could already tell L had it bad. In a matter of seconds he'd fallen head over heels and hadn't realised it yet. But, as long as he was happy and actually socialising and forming relationships, that was totally fine by Watari.
"Alright, get some wool and I'll teach you. You're a lot softer than you think you know L" he agreed.
"I'm not soft"
"You're literally wrapped up in the blanket they made you and blushing"
"S-shut up"
