A/n: after extensive thinking and my own trans awakening I've decided to look at the fact L is a canon cross dresser through a queer lens and officially head canon him as gender non confirming. That mf could not care LESS about gender and you can't tell me otherwise. So, I bring you a GNC!L x Trans!reader.

Your time in Japan so far had been fun, although there was something you have noticed.

Confusion.

Everyone in Japan usually kept to themselves, and while they did have their own pride and fight for rights, there were still some people who didn't really get the whole trans thing. You'd had a few confused looks here and there, but unlike in other countries you'd investigated in, they never approached you to say something about it. You preferred it that way really, you could just continue your day as usual.

Japan was making progress, you were glad about that. But that didn't stop the occasional confused look when you passed by someone and they noticed your obvious gender queer appearance. It's not that you didn't TRY to pass, it's just that passing takes time.

You were fairly ok with your current state in your transition, you'd call it 'the middle'. Not quite done yet, but made a lot of progress. HRT really does wonders.

You didn't expect people to really care about your gender on the case you'd been assigned to, no one ever really did since they had bigger problems to face on a murder case. The occasional dirty look from a an undercover transphobe was about it, as most investigators didn't want to loose their jobs on the basis of discrimination. So they hid their shitty beliefs and you'd just avoid them.

But when you walked onto the strangest case you'd taken so far, the Kira case and were met with the strangest detective you'd ever met so far your experience with being trans on cases changed.

L was a pretty quirky person, but you liked that. Also he was pretty in general.

His hair was fluffy, long for a typical boy as it touched his shoulders at the longest point. He has tired eyes, was tall and slim with a rather nasty slouch. Overall he was oddly charming. And when you first met him he handed you and the taskforce some papers to fill out.

Basic stuff, your medical details and allergies in case something happened to you on the case and whatnot. But there was one section that caught your eye.

Preferred pronouns: she/her. He/him. They/them. Other: ______

Preferred name: _______

Interesting, no other case had had the option to formally state your identity. Usually you'd have to hand over your details based on what was on your legal ID, which always made you cringe since you hadn't had the chance to change it yet.

But, you appreciated the thought and filled that section out with your correct details.

It was when you handed the paper back to L that something clicked in your head. You exchanged a glance when you handed it back, one you knew all too well. Queer solidarity. The look he gave you told you that he knew what you were, and you knew what he was. Immediately that made you wonder.

What kind of queer is he?

But you didn't want to ask in front of everyone in case you'd accidentally out him. You had no idea if anyone else knew or not, so you wouldn't risk it.

The case continued, and you didn't have the chance to say anything directly for a while as the taskforce were always around you both. But you both knew, there was a silent bond between the two of you that told each other you were safe people to come out to if need be. He'd always remind you to 'take your meds' on the days you did HRT, and always comment on your outfits and how they expressed your gender.
