A/n: ghost AU! But slightly different this time.

At first, L had no idea what was going on. He was seemingly watching himself from outside his body. His first thought was dissociation, but that felt completely different to what was happening now.

He watched as his body lay limp, just still on the floor surrounded by the taskforce and suspects all shocked and confused. Light having the absolute audacity to act upset. He poked himself, and found that his hand went straight through his body.

No way... was he dead? Did he just die?

He looked over at the screens, 'all data deletion they read'. That was only meant to happen if he died, and if his body was there on the ground not moving... he was dead. Kira, Light... killed him. Before he could even think of screaming and anger and fear, he recalled that only moments before everything went blurry, he watched Watari drop over the cameras. Turning on his heels and running down the hallway, down the stairs and around the corner to the other room, he pushed on the door to open it, but found himself stumbling through it instead.

Was he a ghost?

He almost fell over, but managed to catch himself. He was met with a similar sight to upstairs. Wataris body was lifeless on the ground but the apparition of him was standing over it seemingly ok.

"Dad!" L said, relived that he wasn't alone in this strange state.

"Oh, you're experiencing this t-" Watari replied.

Before he could furnish L jumped on him, pulling him into a hug with relief. He wasn't alone, he had his dad. Thank god.

"I believe we're dead L" Watari said.

"I think so... that bastard Yagami kid has the audacity to act upset..." L replied.

"The death nots rules said there was no heaven or hell, so maybe this is what that meant? We're some kind of wandering soul? A ghost?"

L looked around, the world looked the same, but no one around seemed to notice them. And their physical bodies were lifeless on the ground. Ghost seemed like the only explanation for whatever was happening here.

"I think you're right... so, what do we do now?" L asked.

"I don't know, I suppose we can just watch and see what happens" Watari replied.

"I can explain everything"

They both jumped, hearing an unfamiliar voice behind them. When they turned, they found someone they didn't recognise. They looked around L's age, had slightly older looking clothes, like what was a trendy in the 90s.

"Who-" L began.

"If you guys can see me that means you're dead huh? Those bodies tell me so. Sorry about that, if I could have told you about your impending doom I would have" you said.

"I'm gathering you're also dead?" Watari asked.

"Yeah, have been for a while. You guys built this place on top of the land I died on so I've been haunting you. About 8 years ago I got into a car crash, died on impact and here I am... a ghost"

So this whole time there's been a ghost in the taskforce building and they never knew? Aren't ghosts meant to make candles levitate and push books off shelves or something?

"You were here the whole time?" L asked.

"Even long before you built here. At least watching you guys investigating was entertaining, better than wandering around the  pathways aimlessly" you replied.

Out of curiosity, L reached out to touch you, and found that he could actually make contact. He was so confused and overwhelmed that when he jumped on Watari I didn't compute that he could touch him. But when he felt your cold skin it set in. He couldn't interact with the physical world, but he could touch other ghosts.

"I know it's kinda confusing, I was confused when it happened to me" you said.

"So we're both dead? And now we're stuck on the land because we died in this spot?" Watari asked.

"Yep, although you can move if you choose to haunt someone and connect yourselves to them. I never have, I just know that from passing other ghosts who are haunting particular people"

"You've been watching us the whole time?" L asked.

"That I have, L Lawliet and Quillish wammy. You kept your names hidden well, only saw them just now in the death note"

L never heard people say his real name, it was a rare occurrence. So hearing it from someone he just met was a little strange to him, although if he was dead it's not like he needed to worry about anything getting leaked anymore.

"You know my name but I don't know yours" L said.

"(Y/n), looks like we're ghost roommates now" you replied.

It was surreal, watching the body squad come in and take their own bodies away, watching the taskforce members process witnessing a double murder and hearing all their true thoughts on the situation. And it was behind frustrating watching Light act sad in front of the others and then immediately laugh like a maniac in victory when they were gone. If only they could interact with the physical world and slap his stupid face.

"I'm haunting Light" L said, watching the scene unfold.

"You are? Don't you want to Rest In Peace?" Watari asked.

"I can't do that until I see him bought to justice. I'm haunting him, you can stay here if you want"

"I can't leave you, even as a ghost you can barely handle yourself L"

That... may be true. L was a smart man but still codependent on his dad, it was all that trauma man, he never had the chance to work through it all.

"Damn, I wanna see this shit show continue. I'm following you too" you said.

"By all means, the more people haunting light the better. Maybe he'll realise he's made a huge mistake when he notices he's being haunted" L replied.

Even though you'd only formally met just now, you'd watched L for almost a year now. As he investigated the case and you haunted the land he stood on, you'd gotten to know him well. And the knowledge you were always so close by in the form of a ghost made L less skeptical of you as he'd usually be with people he just met.

You seemed interesting, maybe he'd make an actual real friend? Although it was kind of funny it took him dying and becoming a ghost to achieve that.
