A/n: time for the annual birthday oneshot. Everyone give L a happy birthday kiss!

Another year, another birthday. Another October of L saying 'you don't need to get me anything' and you taking that as a challenge to get him something even better than last year.

Although you had to admit, you were a little stuck this year. What do you get the man that has everything? He's the worlds greatest detective after all he can basically have anything he wants the second he wants it. So this year, you found yourself stuck.

A trip somewhere? No he travels for work all the time anyway.

Some kind of hard to get lollies? No, he's had every lolly in existence already.

A fancy new computer setup? No he already has the best one.

What do you even get L at this point? It seemed like everything you could think of he either already had, or you already gave it to him the years before. But you weren't going to loose this challenge he unknowingly set you. It's his birthday damnit, he should get a present.

All month you pondered on what to get him, having no idea and as the day got closer you started to panic as time was running out. And then, the day before his birthday it hit you.

You'd make his birthday cake from scratch. His favourite strawberry shortcake all done by hand and decorated almost too good to eat. But you had to work fast, and if you wanted it to be a surprise you had to be sneaky too. So when you had that idea, you immediately went out and got all the ingredients and put them away for the next day. He didn't sleep often, but since it was his birthday the next day and he knew you'd be planning something you convinced him to get some sleep that night.

So here you were, at 3am in your pyjamas up and awake before him. Standing in the kitchen and as quietly as possible making this perfect strawberry shortcake before he woke up. The fresher the better after all. It turns out shortcake wasn't as easy to made as you thought, the batter had to rise on a certain temperature for a certain amount of time and if it was one second too much the cake would collapse in on itself. You had to be careful.

As the oven preheated, you stirred the batter by hand as quiet as you could. Every time you heard movement you'd freak out a little thinking he'd woken up, but each time it ended up just being the cat or some wind outside. Who knew making cake would be so stressful?

You still had to bake the cake, make the icing, cut the strawberries and decorate the finished cake. Hopefully you'd have enough time to do it all before L woke up. Usually he wakes up around 6 since that's usually when the taskforces and agents he works with send him case updates. You had three hours to get this done right.

Pouring the mixed batter into a tin, you then put the tin in the oven to cook and set a timer. You made sure the timer would buzz and not ring as to not wake L up, and went right to cutting the strawberries. Although you couldn't help but glance down at the oven every so often to make sure the cake wasn't burning or collapsing and rising just right.

He better like this cake because it was causing you way too much anxiety here. As you cut the strawberries, you watched as the cat walked down the stairs and sniffed the air as he could tell there was food cooking.

"Hey buddy, please be quiet ok?" You whispered.

Strutting over, he jumped up on the counter and tried to sniff the strawberries you were cutting.

"Ah-ah. Not too close or I'll cut your pretty little whiskers and we don't want that do we?" You said, pushing him away slightly.

You got a loud meow in response to that gentle push.
