A/n: L knowing several languages opens up so many possibilities...

L never used to sleep very well, because he was an unfortunate victim of 'brain won't shut down properly'. As a kid he used to sleep walk, but as he got older it turned into sleep talking. It always seemed to wake him up at random times as well, he'd find himself standing in the hallway talking to the air sometimes. But since meeting you and falling hopelessly in love, you'd helped him get his sleep back on track. The talking part though? That you couldn't get rid of. At least now he wasn't wandering around the house unconscious. He could sleep though a full night, but every other night he'd end up talking some random nonsense in his sleep.

Most of the time it made zero sense at all, just his brain going a bit whack. But sometimes he'd speak as he was dreaming, and it would be interesting to try and figure out what the hell he was dreaming about.

Sometimes you'd already be asleep, and you'd not hear it since he tended to talk quite softly. But if you were still awake, it wasn't uncommon for you to feel him sit up beside to and start talking to nothing in particular. Like tonight, you'd both gone to bed as usual and at some point he'd fallen asleep before you. You were just starting to doze off when you felt his usual hug on you shift and the blankets move as he sat up.

"Here we go" you muttered.

It was silent for a moment, but sure enough, he started talking.

"Dō yatte sore o shiru tsumoridesu ka?"

So it was Japanese tonight huh? He would switch between languages sometimes since he knew so many. You weren't super fluent in them all, so you weren't sure what he was saying sometimes.

"(Y/n) wa shitte irudarou, karera wa kashikoi" he said.

That one caught your attention, your name was in that sentence. You sat up, turned to face him. He seemed completely out of it, he usually did when he was sleep talking. Looking around like he was confused about his surroundings.

"In English please L" you joked.

Your voice caught his attention, he turned to face you. He still had that glassy look in his eye meaning he wasn't fully awake, but clearly he'd heard you.

"Nani?" He said.

Hang on... was here responding to you? You'd heard about that happening in sleep talking cases, but it was uncommon.

"I said can you say that in English" you repeated.

"Oh sorry, you're smart. You know how to make wheat right?" He replied.

You didn't know weather to laugh or be shocked. So it manifested as a dropped jaw and a wheezing laugh. What on earth was he dreaming about? Wheat?

"You grow it" you replied.

"In a pot?" He asked.

"In a field"

This was actually rather fascinating, a rare chance to have someone responsive while they were technically asleep. You were so telling him about this when he woke up properly, knowing him he'd go down a rabbit hole researching it too.

"We need to buy a field then" he said.

"Are we starting a farm?" You asked.

"Yes, for the ducks"

Ok now you were REALLY wanting to know what he was dreaming about. You were clearly in the dream, and if he started speaking Japanese maybe it was in Japan. You had ducks apparently, which meant you needed to make a farm for them? Fair enough, ducks are usually considered farm animals.

"We have ducks to we? I guess we do need a farm then" you replied, trying to hold back your laughter so you didn't wake him up.

"I don't know how to farmer. You can do the plants and I'll do the ducks" he replied.

It was getting increasingly hard to not laugh. L was usually so well spoken, hearing him say things like 'I don't know how to farmer' was just too funny.

"Sure, I'll plant some things" you said.

"Don't overwork yourself, bad for the baby"

If you had a drink, you'd have done a spit take. A baby?? Was dream you pregnant? How was that even possible? Last you checked the chances of you getting pregnant were very low. Then again, this was a dream. Maybe deep down L just really wanted to be a dad.

"You exited to be a dad?" You asked.

"Very exited" he replied, a slight smile cracking on his lips.

Well... that was something you'd definitely have to talk about when he woke up. The deep unconscious desire to be a dad living on a farm in Japan with ducks and wheat fields he apparently had.

"Tell you what honey, how about you get some rest and go to bed. I'll... feed the ducks tonight ok?" You said.

"Ok, I love you"

"I love you too"

And with that, he simply lay back down and went back to sleep. Proper sleep. You just sat there for a moment taking all that in, it was both funny and very interesting. He'd never actually responded to you while sleep talking before, it was interesting to see how it all happened in person and get some insight into what he was dreaming of. It was late, you were tired, you'd think more about it in the morning though. So you to, lay back down and went to sleep.

The next morning, L was the one to wake up first and him reaching over to brush the hair from your face and see if you were awake was what woke you up.

"Good morning sleep talker" you muttered.

"Oh gods... what did I say this time?" He snickered.

"We have a lot to unpack about that dream. You actually responded to me, we had a conversation"

"Wh- really? That's... wow"

You sat up, stretched your arms out and yawned. You didn't get much sleep, you were up thinking about the whole thing.

"Do you remember the dream?" You asked.

"Something about a farm..? There were ducks I remember that" he replied.

"Yep. First you were speaking Japanese, so I jokingly asked you to speak English so I could understand it and you actually did. You asked me if I knew how to make wheat because we needed a farm for the ducks. Told me I could do the planting and you'd handle the ducks, then implied I was pregnant and you were very exited to be a dad, then you went back to sleep"

He just starred at you dumbfounded for a moment, he only really remembered the ducks so this was all news to him.

"Huh?" He muttered.

"I know. Apparently you have a deep unconscious desire to live on a farm in Japan, with ducks and a wheat field. And have a kid... apparently..." you replied.

"I mean... I do like ducks..."

He wasn't sure what to make of this, on one hand it was just a dream. Dreams were weird. They didn't really mean anything most of the time. But on the other, the unconscious mind doesn't have a filter, all your deepest desires and fears could come out with no way to stop them. Maybe deep down, he really did just want a domestic family life. Not right now, he had detective things on the mind, but one day...

"Well... of that ever does happen I think we can agree on a duck themed nursery" he chuckled.

"Definitely, that story behind it would be one hell of a story to tell when the kid grows up..."
