L x Reader oneshots 1 // series 3 • Death Note

One hot day

A/n: DN deserves a beach episode. Would it fit in w the series? No. But I wanna see beach shenanigans with the characters Damnit.

It was the hottest day in Japan, if people weren't at home in the air conditioning they were out at the pool or in this case the beach. It was so hot in the taskforce building no one found focus, and Misa being Misa found a way to drag everyone to the beach.

She said a nice break would clear minds and boost morale, L on the other hand was annoyed that he'd have to sweat in the sand all day. He didn't like the heat, he hated wearing short clothes. It made him feel too exposed and because he was so damn pale he burnt super easily. So while everyone else built sand castles, played in the waves and kicked a ball around, he sat on the beach lounge under an umbrella.

At least he had his favourite summer drink. Ice cold strawberry lemonade, with a little umbrella in it of course. He felt hot, slimy from all the sun scream Watari made him put on and bored out of his mind. While the beach could be nice and relaxing when it was THIS hot he'd rather stay in the air conditioning.

So there he sat, drink in hand, under the umbrella with shades to hide his dead inside gaze and wishing he was at home. Maybe he'd be more willing to go to the beach if it wasn't absolutely sweltering. At least the ice cream truck sold watermelon ice pops...

Misa, who'd taken this as an excuse to break out her newest skull and crossbones bikini was having way too much fun with Matsuda. They were both burying Light in the sand, L had no idea how they convinced him to do that but it was a little amusing watching the two of them just completely cover him to his neck in sand.

The other taskforce members were taking a game of beach volleyball way too seriously. It was getting a little competitive but L couldn't care less. Unless a fight broke out over who touched the ball last he would just sit and watch.

The beach wasn't super packed, but it did have a good amount of people out in the sun lining the shore, kids making sandcastles, couples on dates, a birthday party barbecue. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. L wasn't really paying any attention until he heard something hit the chair near him, and when he turned to look he found a new beach goer a few chairs down.

They'd dumped their stuff on one of the chairs and laid their surfboard over their lap to wax it. The board in question was a classic fish board with three fins, and a custom coat of paint. Hibiscus flowers and coconuts decorated it in a typical tropical fashion. The surfer seemed to be a pretty experienced one, as the board was clearly well loved and they didn't even bother to wear a wetsuit, just regular swim wear. He couldn't help but watch as the surfer attached themselves to their leg rope and headed off for the waves.

He wasn't super into sport, he only really played tennis as a teen and learnt capoeira for self defence. But he did find surfing pretty impressive. It required balance, patience and a considerable amount of courage to brave rougher waters.

The surfer in question was quick to get out past white waters and into the wave zone where they lay in wait for a good wave, it became even more clear they were experienced when they could read the waves so well they were able to start paddling at the exact moment a wave began to form.

And just like that, up in their feet and cruising down the wave as if it were nothing. Impressive really, the timing was perfect and the balance was precise.

"RYUUUUZZZAAAKKIII!"

And there goes his ear drums.

"What do you want Misa?" He complained.

"Gimme the bucket were gonna dunk light since he can't run away in the sand" Misa said.

He looked over to find Light trying to get out of his sand pit while Matsuda just kept burying him. Ok, he'd admit that was amusing. Picking up the bucket and handing it to Misa, she was about to run off again when she noticed L's absent minded gaze out at the waves. Following his gaze, she found him inspecting the surfer that'd just caught a barrel wave.
