"Clothes... they're warm"
"Yeah that's kind of the point"
It was strange to se a siren with legs. Whatever magic he'd done while you went to get him clothes had worked. Now the next morning you were docked back at the harbour and the next step was getting him to walk. You'd told him to grab anything he wanted to bring onto land with him, and he ended up with a fishing net bag full of random siren treasures he had. Big but enough to stuff into the deep pockets of his jeans.
You'd found some basic clothes for him, plain blue jeans and a white shirt, a bit big for him but he didn't seem to mind. There was one small problem. Just because his tail was hidden, doesn't mean his other siren features were. He still had his pointed ears, little fangs and webbed hands. Maybe some fingerless gloves slightly too big would work? You'd have to see. His hair was quite long when it was wet, but as it had dried it fluffed you a bit, you hoped no one would notice his ears in the fluff.
And of course, there were the striking blue eyes of his. Decorated by Eyebags. While you could pass off his eyes as "oh they're just really bright" it may draw some attention up close. You'd have to be careful to make sure no one spotted the fish features.
"My hips feel weird..." he said.
"Like how?"
"It's like my hip fins are still there but I can't touch them. These jeans are uncomfortable"
Oh, so kind of like phantom limb syndrome? When amputees can still feel their amputated limb because their brain is trying to find it. Yeah, pants may make that uncomfortable, but he can't exactly walk the streets with none.
"You gotta keep them on sorry, you get in trouble if you don't wear clothes in public" you replied.
He seemed annoyed, but didn't complain any further since he wanted to see the land. You reached out your hands to him, and his webbed ones grabbed onto them. You pulled him up to his feet and held him steady as he stepped out of the boat and onto the docks.
"What's this stuff? Feels like old shipwreck material" he asked about the new sensation under his feet.
"Oh yeah, you don't have trees in the ocean. It's wood. Very old boats were made out of it before we moved to metal and tough plastic" you explained.
"It feels weird"
"You'll get used to it. You'll feel a lot of new things on land. Now let's see if we can get this walking thing down"
He knew the general jist of how to walk, he'd just never done it before. One foot in front of the other right? He took a step, holding onto your hands for balance. He was a bit wobbly at first but the more steps he took, the more he got the hang of it.
"See? Not too hard. It becomes second nature" you said.
"It's... ok? Feels a bit wonky. Guess that's because I'm used to a tail" he replied.
You let him go, but stood close in case he fell. Holding his arms out for balance he managed to get the hang of walking with a few stumbles here and there.
"There you go! You got it" you smiled.
"It's easy until I trip on air" he replied.
"Even I still trip on air sometimes. You'll get the hang of it the more you do it"
"So I'm good enough to walk on land and get more sweet things?"
"Yeah, let's go now. I'm hungry I want breakfast"
He smiled, exited to eat all the sweet things land had to offer.
"Ok! But hold my hand!" He said.
