The night was warm, the middle of summer and hot as hell. On the deck of the restaurant you sat on the railing watching the waves down at the beach. There wasn't much for you to do tonight, the family restaurant had been rented out by a company for a party so everyone was occupied making food and waiting tables. And you? You were 'too unprofessional' to be working tonight, all the uptight business men wouldn't appreciate your laid back behaviour and sailors mouth. So your parents told you to not bother tonight and they'd deal with it, not that you really cared. You didn't want to wait tables for rich assholes anyway.

The music from the restaurant was muffled, the chatter seeming distant even though you were just out on the deck. The heavy glass doors blocked the noise out.

Nearby restaurants and cafes along the boardwalk filled the air with sounds of life as well, but they were distant sounding and all you could really hear was the crickets and the waves.

It was pretty boring tonight for you, nothing to do and no one to kill time with. The restaurant didn't close until 1am though, so you were stuck there until it closed and you could go home. If only you'd passed your driving test...

"Man, 20 and still waiting for parents like a child..." you muttered, looking through the glass doors at the full restaurant.

Rolling your eyes in annoyance, you turned back to look out at the ocean and sighed. Surely there was something you could do? Digging into your bag, you looked for some kind of entertainment.

Phone, keys, headphones, charger, lip balm... oh yeah, your book. You still hadn't finished reading it yet. Jumping down off the railing and landing in the sand, you decided to sit on one of the beach chairs and continue your book from earlier.

Kicking your legs up, using the light from the fairy lights on the railing behind you, you opened your copy of the virgin suicides and picked up where you'd left off. The part where Lux was abandoned by Trip on the football field. What an asshole.

Inside the restaurant, it was loud. Music, chatter, plates and glasses clinking. It was driving L insane. He was here to investigate one of the businessmen who was allegedly running a crime ring with the companies funds, but the amount of noise was getting to him. It was crowded, loud and the food wasn't even up to dessert yet. He'd seen enough for now, he had a handful of evidence recorded. Deciding to take a break and continue later, he slipped out the glass doors and onto the deck.

It was immediately quieter, only the muffled chatter from inside and the waves in the distance. He was immediately reminded how hot the day was when he stepped out of the air conditioning and felt the change in temperature. He took the designer coat he was wearing to blend in off, and leaned against the railing. Taking a breath and sighing, he was starting to wonder if this case was worth it.

"Fuck... why are people so obnoxious..." he muttered.

Sure the case needed to be solved, but with how much undercover work it needed he was starting to wonder if he should get some agents involved. He never did like crowded social situations.

Hearing the sudden presence of someone behind you, you looked up and saw the man above you against the railing.

Tall, fluffy black hair, pale. Cute, so cute. In that tall, dark and mysterious way.

"So not everyone in there is a drunk, rich asshole huh?" You joked.

He looked down, suddenly realising you were there. For a moment, he just... stared.

He'd never seen someone so gorgeous in his life, the way you lay out on the beach chair in that matching top and shorts set. Your skin smooth and clear, your cheeky smile, the way you'd done your hair up that day. It all just... worked. It suited you so perfectly, he'd never felt such a star struck feeling before, it took him a moment to snap out of it.

"Oh- uh... yeah I'm not really into this whole thing" he replied.

"Why'd you come?" You asked.

He couldn't reveal he was an undercover detective, let alone L. So he had to play along.

"Company policy" he lied.

"Damn, shit company policy. Company parties are so awkward anyway"

He was glad at least someone here didn't want to only talk about money and the yacht they'd bought last week. Noticing the book in your hands, his interest was peaked.

"What are you reading?" He asked.

"The virgin suicides" you replied.

Ah yes, he'd read that. And seen the movie. It was so famous for a reason, it was good. Bought up a lot of the issues with how women are viewed by the male gaze, and overbearing parenting. How purity culture can harm a girl more than help them.

"Good choice, it's a good book. How far in are you?" He asked.

"The part where Trip leaves Lux, bloody asshole" you replied.

"I know, teenage boys have no class"

This mysterious man was not only cute, but actually interesting. He didn't like the whole rich asshole thing the other businessmen had going on, he read good books, from the looks of those eyebags he was a night owl too.

"You got a name mysterious man?" You asked.

"...Ryuzaki" he replied.

He couldn't tell you he was L, at least... not yet.

"Ooh, Japanese name. They always have cool names. I'm (y/n), my parents own the restaurant" you introduced.

So you were the owners kid, he'd seen your name while investigating the venue he'd be undercover at. When he saw the mention of the owners having a kid, he expected an actual kid since you were still with your parents. But no, you were a whole adult just stuck with your parents for the time being.

"Not helping out tonight?" He asked.

"Nah, the parentals think I'm too foul mouthed to be serving high end clients. They're right, of course. But hey I'm not complaining I don't wanna wait tables for a bunch of pretentious fucks" you explained.

"Can't blame you, the small talk in there is so annoying. I don't care about your private jet or million dollar salary, I'm here because I have to be. Not because I want to be"

"Mood. The only expensive thing I care about is the cost of living nowadays, that's why I'm still stuck with my parents"

There was something about you that made all L's frustration with those inside just... fade away. Maybe it was your cheeky smile, or your no fucks given attitude, but you were a breath of fresh are compared to those inside. Safe to say, he was thoroughly distracted.

It was like time had stopped. It was just you on the beach chair, L on the deck, the waves in the distance and the warm night air. Call it fate or something, but this moment just felt right. L wanted to know more about you and your sly gaze, and you wanted to know more about him and his mysterious eyes.

The mystery man looking down at you from the deck, had your full attention.

"If you wanna escape that place for a while, wanna chill down here. I can get us some cherry cola" you asked.

He really should be investigating... but...

"If it's ice cold, you got a deal"
