Defending

So here you were, standing before your own brother. Your brother who you knew, you just knew... was the one behind all of this. Kira, Light Yagami. The man you were ashamed to share a last name with.

Your father may not see it yet, your little sister and mother still completely in the dark. But you knew, you knew the moment you noticed his shift in behaviour.

Call it a sibling thing, but you could tell your brother was up to something. It was subtle, enough that the rest of your family couldn't see it, but you noticed. He did spend a lot of time in his room studying already, but recently he'd just locked himself up even more. He used to be pretty involved with the family, recently he'd been withdrawn. He can't use exam study as an excuse when the exams were already over.

And then there's the talking, the muttering to himself you can hear through the walls, his bedroom next to yours. The glancing off to the side like he was looking at something you couldn't see. But the breaking point was the argument you had, because how dare you be a good sibling and ask if he's ok?

As soon as you bought up the shift in behaviour, he got defensive. When you told him to calm down, he got even more defensive. And when you said 'fine then, keep your secrets. I think I already know them anyway...' and he got eerily silent... that only confirmed your suspicions.

And then, you met L.

And through him and the evidence he'd collected so far your opinion only solidified, your brother was Kira.

And he knew, he knew that you'd figured it out. And he was mad, horrified you'd take L's side.

"You're my sibling, my family. And you turn your back on me? What happened to blood is thicker than water?" Light scoffed.

"That doesn't apply when your brother is a serial killer" you replied.

"And who will believe you? Apart from L who just hates me anyway. Dad won't, mum won't, Sayu won't"

"But L does. That's all that matters, he's the one with the power to arrest you"

Light crossed his arms, giving you a frustrated sigh.

"You just don't see it don't you? Ridding the world of criminals make it a safer place, and such dire consequences deter people from even thinking about it" he said.

"How are you our fathers offspring Light? He's taught us since we were kids. There'll always be crime, as long as the world has discrimination, poverty, corruption. There's socioeconomic reasons for crime, there's false convictions, there's untreated mental illness. You're killing innocent people, and people who can be reformed. Sure, maybe some people are so bad they deserve death, but that's in extreme cases and is fairly decided in court. You can't be the judge, jury and executioner" you replied.

Clearly Light didn't care, clearly it wasn't about justice. He was deeply egotistical, had a god complex, properly unstressed narcissism problems. If he'd gotten help before he killed all those people, maybe he could have been reformed. With therapy and the right medication, maybe he could have had a normal life. But no, he made the choice to kill. You didn't know how yet, but you knew he was of sound mind when he made that first kill.

This wasn't about justice, it was about power. He wanted power.

"Change like that won't happen, you know it (y/n)" he said.

"Not if people stay silent on the issue. That's why protests happen, that's why petitions are signed. The more voices to a cause the stronger it is. These things take time and planning, you can't just look at anyone you don't like or who opposes you and kill them" you scoffed.
