Umbrella

AU: when you're soulmate sings, you can hear them in your head.
I think this song is fitting given L's habit of standing out in the rain.

Silence, he'd grown to dislike long periods of silence, because the absence of singing in his head worried him. But he sat in silence working tirelessly on the case with the insufferable suspect next to him. It poured outside, he liked the rain. Partly because he just liked the feeling of it, partly because ever since he was little the song his soulmate always sung was about rain in a way.

He had no idea where in the world they were, who they were or what their name was. But he knew they sung this song a lot. If it wasn't then rick rolling him at midnight out of the blue by singing never gonna give you up, it was this song.

He didn't sing that much, he never really thought he sounded good. But occasionally he'd find himself singing along to whatever his soulmate was. The silence broke, to that familiar song. It made him smile.

There it was. He missed it, he wondered why he hadn't heard it in a while. He always associated this song with his mysterious soulmate even though they'd never met before. He wondered what they associated with him.

"Now that it's raining more than ever

You can stand under my umbrella"

He gazed out the window, wanting to go out in the rain and just listen to the song. Away from the stress of taskforce. He was the boss here after all... he could do what he wanted.

Getting up, the taskforce turned their attention to him.

"Where are you going?" Light asked.

"Out" he stated.

No one questioned him, they all thought L was weird and grew used to it. He knew he'd get scolded by Watari if he didn't at least wear a raincoat, so he put one on even though the heavy rain would still get him a bit wet. And out he went.

He didn't know where he was going, just a walk really. He took a breath of the humid air, felt the rain against his body, and didn't look back. Sometimes the urge to runaway from the case was strong, but he stayed as this was something no one else was doing. Someone had to catch Kira. But at least he could get away from it for a while.

"You can run into my arms, it's ok don't be alarmed.
Come into me..."

"There's no distance in between our love" he continued.

The singing stopped for moment. It wasn't often he sung back, so his mystery soulmate likely wasn't expecting it.

"So gonna let the rain pour, I'll be all you need and more-"

He couldn't help but some listening to the song continue after him. It felt kind of cliché since he was wandering around in the rain as this song from his soulmate played in his head. But it was comforting and symbolic in a way. He'd heard this song so much from them he knew all the words, and whenever he was feeling particularly lonely he'd put it on and think about the day he finally met them.

He decided to sing back again, just to let them know that even tho he didn't sing often he was always listening.

He'd gotten to a a busy street, one he knew had a good cake shop at the end. Maybe he could head there on this pointless walk and get something.
