Katie hands out her birthday invitations personally, giving them fancy placards and goodie bags wrapped in shimmery pink plastic. Miyoung is standing next to her, smiling from ear to ear. And she's certainly not that happy to see Jimin.
"I'm only inviting you guys because you won the Math Decathlon. Don't show up if you don't want to," Katie sings in her reedy uppity voice and walks away, hair flouncing at each step. The hem of her skirt has to be at least three inches above what is noted in the school regulations, coming up to her thighs. Jimin shudders to think of all the sharks who would pounce on her if she knelt even just a little bit.
"Bullshit," Jimin mutters when the girls are a fair distance away. "Everyone and their mother knows Miyoung has the hots for you. That's the only reason Katie would invite us—and by us I mean you."
Taehyung chokes as he slams his locker shut. Taehyung always plays himself down. Sometimes a little too much. "No way! She barely even knows I exist. I'm just a blip on her radar. A random face. She's popular and I'm—I'm just a nerd."
Well yeah, last year Taehyung truly had been just a nerd. But over the summer he'd gone to his grandma's place. And God knows what he'd been doing there. She had a farm though, so Jimin could guess that Taehyung had been helping around a great deal. Anyway, he came back with lean muscles and a perpetual tan, his voice as deep as the ocean. Puberty basically hit him like a truck.
Plus he lost his glasses. It's amazing how a single accessory could skyrocket a person's standing on the high school popularity charts. But then again, Taehyung has always been handsome, he just had to grow into his features.
He's still Jimin's goofy lovable friend, there's no mistaking that. But Taehyung is now a hot nerd. And Jimin is unfortunately the same he's ever been. Still pale and slight. Still short. Still with baby fat clinging to his cheeks and for some godforsaken reason, his fingers.
"Dude, you're kind of popular now. You're semi popular. You could sit at the popular table and they wouldn't kick you out. Or maybe they would hesitate, but it'd be a long deliberation."
Taehyung laughs as he exchanges his books. They only have Biology left and then they're free for the day. And it's Jimin's favourite class, since he has it with Taehyung. It's the greatest feeling to end the day with a friendly face.
"I'm really not. And you know what? I'm totally okay with that. I'm okay with whatever I am as long as I've got you old buddy old pal." Taehyung slings his arm over Jimin's shoulder, his other hand holding onto his backpack.
"You're totally trying to butter me up, aren't you. Why? Do you want to go to the party?" He throws his own arm over Taehyung's shoulders. The probably make quite a picture from walking so awkwardly.
"Maybe. A little? Do you think Miyoung really likes me?"
Jimin scoffs. "If you'd let her, she'd rip your shirt off right here in this hallway and suck your face."
"Miyoung? Are we talking about the same Miyoung here? Cool cheerleader Miyoung?"
"Blushing, shy-around-you Miyoung, yeah totally. Same Miyoung we've known since forever."
They squeeze past a group of students holding hand drawn posters and wearing tree hugging t-shirts. One reads 'Plz save trees' and another says 'Plant one tree for one kiss'.
"Listen," Jimin says, when they make it through to the other side, crossing over into the science building. "You're a great guy Tae, you're a real charmer and you've got nice hair. It's what chicks dig. I'd be asking questions if Miyoung didn't like you."
