CW: heavy talk of religion (based around Christian, but I'll talk more about other gods later), negative thinking

Virgil fell onto his bed with a sigh, but he smiled wide as he felt Roman sit next to him. Sure it had been a long day, but... He really liked Logan and Patton. And yeah Logan seemed a bit uptight and intimidating, he wasn't going to lie. But it did seem like he wanted to adopt a kid, so surely there had to be a soft side to him.

And Patton just seemed like an amazing father! He seemed like the goofy parent, the one who wanted to spoil their children. He was definitely kind, and a beacon of joy. Plus, they were both gay! So there's no way they could be homophobic!

Their orphanage has a program where the possible parent, or parents, can take the kid out for a few hours every weekend to get to know them better. Of course, that's after a background check on the parents so that the orphanage can be sure that they will give the kid a safe home.

After a few weeks of the parents and kid getting to know each other better, the kid can move into their home for a few weeks. Then someone would come over, inspect the house and talk to the kid in private to be sure it's a safe place and that the kid is happy there. It was a long process, but if everything seemed to be okay then the adoption process would be finalized.

Virgil was so happy to think he was going to finally be adopted. He only had six weeks left before his birthday, and it had felt like a countdown all year long. It was exhausting, but if he can manage to make Logan and Patton like him...

What if they don't like him?

The thought made Virgil's stomach drop and he immediately sat up. Roman's smile dropped when he saw the look on Virgil's face.

"What if they don't like me?" he whispered to himself fearfully, curling into himself.

"Why wouldn't they? They seemed happy while talking to you earlier," Roman said.

"I-I lost my job today, I'm not exactly the most pleasant person, I-I..." Virgil choked on what he was going to say. There weren't many people he had talked to about that... Delores was the only one in the whole orphanage.

"Sure you dress a little creepy, but you're really kind!" Virgil sent the demon a glare. "When you want to be. I mean, the kids here love you! And you barely talk to them! I think the only problem those two men would have with you is me. And they don't need to know about me."

Virgil hugged his knees to his chest. "I don't know... There's a reason I'm here, Roman."

"Well, I might not know why you're here, however the Berry's seem like a nice couple who would be ready to accept an emo son. Did I use that word correctly? Emo?"

Virgil snorted in amusement. "Yeah, did Remus teach you it?"

"He has taught me a plethora of... new words..." Roman made a disgusted face. "Humanity never ceases to... be queer."

"That word has a new meaning now too, we use weird for that. Queer now means being anything but heterosexual and cisgender."

"Cisgender?"

Virgil sighed, "A lot has changed up here, Lord Roman."

"Okay I know that was sarcasm. And I'm not even a demon lord! I'm a prince! When did humans start using that for me!"

"Ooh princey- wait does that mean Remus is a prince?"

"No, he's a duke."

"How does that even work in Hell? And... if there's Hell and demons, does that mean there's heavens and angels?"
