CW: food (it's not in detail, but just in case)
The giant house was full of the smell of cooking, and that was saying something. Roman watched as everyone moved about in the kitchen, preparing meal after meal. It didn't help that Xander wasn't there, since he was with his own family to celebrate the holiday. But the older kids were helping, including Virgil and Janus.
Janus was stirring the cranberries in a pot, making a disgusted face. Meanwhile Virgil was helping Delores prepare the turkey, having a less disgusted face since it was already cooked.
Roman was trying to pretend he was better, but the two humans and his brother kept catching him leaning against something.
"Oh for fuck's sake, sit down!" Remus told him finally. "You look like a chihuahua standing there shaking like that!"
"I'm not shaking," Roman lied, but he walked over to a chair and sat down. "I'm fine."
"I don't have to be your twin to know that was a lie. It takes time to recover from this! I can't believe you're still as stubborn as ever! You and Virgil are perfect for each other!" Remus threw his hands up.
Roman's face turned red and he tried to hide it in his hands, leaning forward with his elbows resting on his knees. "I can handle myself," he mumbled.
"Just rest. Ooh more cranberries." Remus went over to Janus, going to stick a finger in the pot but Janus smacked him with the spoon, sending him a glare. The demon shrugged before licking the cranberry sauce off of his hand from the spoon.
"Delores, I think the cranberries are done," Janus said.
"Okay, move the pot onto a towel and then put a new pot on the stove for the gravy," Delores told him as she grabbed more stuffing and butter.
"Hey, I just realized that you won't be helping with the turkey next year," Remus said. "The oldest always does that."
"Oh poor me," Janus mumbled sarcastically under his breath.
"Do we have any extra cranberries?"
"Turkey is shredded," Virgil said, setting down the knife and tongs.
"Okay," she sighed. "Anything else?"
"Mac and cheese," Lila said as she peeled potatoes. "You know the younger kids aren't going to eat anything else."
"Right, well, it's a good thing we got boxed mac and cheese cause we won't have time to start from scratch."
Virgil went to the pantry, which was already unlocked. Roman watched him from his seat with a curious look on his face.
"Oh mac and cheese! I wonder how much that has changed," Roman said.
"A lot!" Remus called out. "There are thousands of recipes for it, but boxed is the most common."
"Don't worry, Virgil, I got it," Delores said, taking the boxes from him. "Just help Lila peel. Though, we are expecting some people so can you be prepared to answer the door."
"Okay..." Virgil replied, confusion in his voice as he handed over the boxes of mac and cheese and went to go help peel.
"So this holiday first started after the colonizers and natives fought together against another tribe, correct?" Roman asked.
"Yeah, but it was before the colonizers fought against the natives that they had befriended, a few decades later I think," Remus replied as he went to sit next to Roman, holding a handful of cranberries.
"I see, so if they fought against one another, why continue with this holiday?"
"Tradition, humans are funny like that, huh? Now this holiday is just an excuse to eat." Remus threw a couple of cranberries in his mouth.
