CW: talk of death and cremation (very brief)
"Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday dear Janus!" Everyone sang as they surrounded the table, though Remus called him "Janny!" The birthday witch rolled his eye with his arms folded up. "Happy birthday to you!"
He blew out the candles on his cake as everyone clapped. Emile started taking the candles out, all 18 of them... Remy and Remus went overboard, they loved their fire, though Remy has more control than the demon.
"You're finally a legal adult!" Patton congratulated, patting his back. "Though, I doubt Remy and Emile will have an easy time letting go of you."
"Ha! Like I want to move out anytime soon," Janus said.
It has been a little over a year since the apocalypse, and humanity's rebuild has been... slow. Companies were in shambles, so it took a while for food, clothes, and construction to start up again. But for the most part, communities all over the world helped out.
No one could stop talking about 'The Red Nights.' Religious groups all had their own ideas of what happened, their own stories. Scientists are still trying to figure out what could have made the whole Earth turn red for so many days, and what the creatures were. Only a rare few knew what happened, though most weren't keen on sharing, and no one really believed the ones that tried explaining.
Alice's castle had been torn down. Roman and Remus had gone in and brought out everyone they could. And those that weren't alive... their bodies were returned to their families. Graveyards got a lot bigger... and cremation centers were busy for a long time.
Therapy was also popular for a while, even therapists needed to see therapists. Emile was busy for a long time, and had to take several mental breaks, but things have just started to calm down.
There was now a new profession, demon hunting. The veil was definitely damaged, and some demons slipped through. It made the world a bit safer, though most of them didn't understand how to kill a demon.
Emile started cutting the cake and handing it out. "Okay, the birthday boy gets the first slice."
"Boy? He's a man now!" Remus said, and Remy ended up glaring at him. Living with him for so long... well... With his humor it's no surprise he would have a feeling what activities Remus enjoys. Remy is still Janus's father.
Everyone started to eat their cake. It was green velvet with rainbow frosting on the inside, black frosting surrounding it with golden accents. The black frosting turned out to be chocolate, making the cake way too chocolaty for most of them. Not surprising, Patton and Remus were the only ones that finished.
"Present time!" Emile said, going to grab his for Janus.
Virgil got his present that he brought too, and Remus summoned his. Virgil's was in a bag, and Remus's was a round cylinder, getting another glare from Remy.
"Here's mine!" He gave it to Janus.
The witch looked at the cylinder object with worry in his eyes. "I'm... afraid of what this could be," he admitted. "It's a bit heavy too..."
"Ah come on! It's not that bad!" Remus waved him off. "Open it!"
Janus gave him a look before peeling back the wrapping paper. He saw it was a yellow tumbler cup with a snake skin pattern. His eye widened in shock, the straw was taped to the side. He opened it and gasped at what he saw.
"Did you seriously give me golden coins?" he asked, pulling one out.
Remus shrugged. "I have a bunch of them lying around."
