Buttercup was curled up next to Virgil, she has gotten bigger and her fur has grown darker, but she is still very much a kitten. Her constant purring seemed to keep the god calm as he rested. Despite no longer needing to sleep, it did help his injuries heal faster.

Roman sat on the desk chair next to the bed, his sword that he had bent in his hands. He looked over the blade, the red and black metal bent back. It was a sword he got in Japan a long time ago, and he had infused it with his magic.

He didn’t feel regretful about it being broken, it was well worth it to save Virgil. However… it was a piece of him. He had used it in so many battles.

Running his fingers on the blade, he tried to bend it back into shape. He would need to take it to a forge down in Hell if he wanted to fix it. He didn’t have time though, plus he had plenty of other weapons. He doesn’t even need a weapon as long as he has his claws.

He sent it away and turned to Virgil. His boyfriend’s face was soft, holding a relaxed expression. Roman took his hand, letting his magic wash over. His ribs had healed well, and there were only cuts left on his chest. The worst of it was his wrists and his leg, and even those weren’t as horrible as they were earlier.

“Out of all of your powers, I’m most thankful for this one,” Roman sighed with a smile. He stood up, making Buttercup raise her head and give a soft meow. The demon carefully scratched her head, making her purr louder.

He left their side and was going to grab his phone that was at the end of the bed when he heard a strange noise from outside. He cautiously walked over to the window, summoning a knife. No demon should be able to get inside thanks to the protection spells, but that didn’t mean they were completely safe.

The curtain was pulled back, bathing the room in a red light. Roman’s eyes widened at the group of demons. They were harmless, and seemed to be arguing with each other. One pushed another closer to the house, and after grumbling for a moment, it reached out and was shocked by the protection spell.

Roman glared at them, and one noticed him before rushing behind a bush. The others looked confused before noticing Roman and doing the same. These imps were clearly not very bright… So what were they trying to do?

There was a small noise behind Roman, and he turned back to Virgil, pulling the curtains back. He walked closer to the god, quickly noticing the way Virgil was frowning, turning his head away slightly. A whimper escaped his lips, squeezing Roman’s heart.

“Virgil?” he quietly called, sitting on the edge of the bed as Buttercup stood up. The god didn’t wake up, and instead seemed to panic more. He let out a small sob, and Roman stopped breathing. “Shit.” He was having a nightmare. Roman grabbed Virgil’s arm and shook him slightly. “Virgil? Vee, dear, you need to wake up.”

“No, no do… don’t…” Virgil gasped in his sleep.

“It’s okay, love, you’re safe.” Buttercup got out of the way as Roman moved closer. “You’re not going to get hurt, just wake up, it’s gonna be okay.”

Virgil curled up more with another sob, his hands coming to his chest. He was panicking more, getting worse as his body refused to release him from sleep.

Roman saw a spark jump from Virgil’s fingers, then a few strands of electricity. The demon moved as fast as he could, grabbing Buttercup and teleporting to the other side of the room.

There was a loud crack, a bright light branching from Virgil’s hands to the metal lamp at the bedside. The glass bulb brightened for a moment before it popped and shattered.

Roman took a deep breath and set Buttercup down on the ground, rushing over to Virgil’s side. The god’s eyes were glowing, tears slowly welling up in his eyes as he curled up and hyperventilated.

“Virgil, shh it’s okay,” Roman cooed, stepping away from broken glass as he reached the bed.

The god’s breathing slowed down and he blinked, his eyes looking over at the broken lamp. The smoking lamp shade was practically destroyed, either burned or melted to the flimsy metal. The glass covered the nightstand, slipping off onto the carpet, and the small metal stand was burning red where it was hit.

Roman tried to get his attention by setting his hand down on his arm. “Virgil?” he asked. “Are you okay? Are you there?”

Virgil let out a small whine, not sure he could talk. It was just a nightmare, that’s all it was. He was fine, he didn’t mean to- Gods he hated this power of his. He was so pathetic, he couldn’t control it or his emotions.

“Let’s sit you up, okay?” Roman pushed an arm under Virgil, making him tense up as the demon lifted him.

Tears started to fill Virgil’s vision again, and he lifted a shaky hand as he blinked them away. Roman gave him a tight hug, but he just couldn’t move to return it.

“It was just a dream, you’re safe,” Roman told him. “You’re not going to get hurt.”
Virgil leaned into the demon. “I’m sorry,” he whispered.

Roman’s heart broke as he continued to hold the trembling god. “You don’t need to apologize for anything.” He pulled back and wiped away one of Virgil’s tears with his thumb. “It was just a dream.”

“I shouldn’t- I shouldn’t have gotten so scared of a dream. It was just a stupid memory of A-Al…” Virgil sighed in defeat. He couldn’t even say her name. “Of her…”

“She hurt you really badly, that’s nothing to be ashamed of. And you didn’t know that it was a dream.”

“I’m still so scared,” Virgil cried. “I’m trying to be happy now that I’m safe, but I’m so scared of her. I-I don’t know what to do. I don’t want to ever see her again, please don’t make me.”

“Virgil, no one is going to-”

“I-I don’t want to fight her. I’m too scared, she-she’ll hurt me. I can’t fight her, I know that no one else is strong enough, but I just can’t.”

Roman deflated slightly. “You always were super smart…” He mumbled. “But I promise you that I’ll make sure you won’t have to.” He kissed Virgil’s forehead. “Just don’t worry about it, everything will be okay.”

“I wish I never became a stupid god.” Virgil wiped away one of his tears. “I wish I was still human, even if I would be dead by now.”

“I just wish that the cultists never found us… I am so happy that you’re alive but… It all would have been better if they didn’t kidnap us. On the brightside… you won’t ever lose your soul.”

Virgil looked down at his hands. “I wish I could… then at least I couldn’t lose you. I’m immortal, and you can still die.”

Roman cupped Virgil’s cheek and turned him so they were facing. “You’re not going to lose me, and I’m not going to die.”

A light came back to Virgil’s dull eyes, and then more tears. Roman could lie to him now, but he knew for certain that this wasn’t a lie.

“Promise?”

“I swear it, I’m going to stay by your side, because I love you.” There was a meow, and Buttercup pawed Roman’s leg. He chuckled and picked her up, setting her on the bed besides Virgil. “And she loves you too.”

The god sniffled, wiping away his tears again before petting Buttercup, who just leaned into his hand. “Thank you, Roman. I love you too.”
