"What do you think they're doing?" Delores asked, peering out the window through a crack in the curtains. It's only been a day, but more and more demons were looking into the house. Some have left, seemingly haven given up, but others stayed.
"It's Alice, it has to be," Remus whispered. "She must be looking for Virgil."
"What are we going to do?" Patton asked. "We can't let her take Virgil again!"
"We're not going to," Logan reassured him.
"We shouldn't tell Roman or Virgil, they'll freak out," Janus told them. "For now, we let the protection spells do their job."
"Will they be able to damage the protection spells?" Emile asked, stepping back from the window.
"No, they're too weak to," Remus said. He chewed on his lip for a moment. "However... if there's enough of them then they might. I'll have to exterminate a few."
There were footsteps down the hall and everyone turned to see Remy. He frowned when he noticed them all clustered together. "What are you doing?" he asked.
"Watching the demons," Patton answered. "How's Virgil?"
"Well, his injuries are almost healed. All that's left is his wrists and broken leg. It's amazing! It's only been three days! And there's no scars either! He really isn't human anymore."
"Well, that's a relief," Logan sighed. "If he was human, and he somehow managed to survive, it would have taken him months to recover."
"I'm gonna go find Kayden," Remus said. "He should be asleep, and I don't want him to wake up alone."
"I'll go with you," Janus said.
"I'll bring you three breakfast soon," Emile told them as they walked off.
"I should go check on the kids," Delores said. "See who's up and get them breakfast."
"I'll help you, Delores," Patton offered. "I should check on Virgil too, I know he doesn't need food now but I'm sure he still enjoys some of his favorites. I'll make some Patton-cakes for the kiddos first."
"Patton-cakes?"
"Pancakes with chocolate chips and whipped cream," Logan explained.
"Oh, yeah they'll definitely love that." Delores sighed and followed Patton to the kitchen.
"Well, guess we'll have some sugar filled kids soon then," Remy said. "Man, I'm better with older kids than younger kids."
"I feel the same," Logan agreed. "How is Virgil, really?"
"Well he was sitting up on his own when I entered, talking with Roman. However, I'm assuming you mean mentally, and that would be my husband's department." He tilted his head towards Emile.
"Right, I suppose that's true. I don't want to put too much on your plate, Emile, but-"
"Of course I'll talk with Virgil," Emile told him. "You don't need to ask me that. However... Ultimately that's up to Virgil. I can try to ask him questions all I want, but it's up to him to answer them honestly. It takes a long time for people to feel comfortable with sharing their traumatic experiences. I think being with Roman will help him feel comfortable enough."
"Thank you, Emile. We owe you so much."
"Logan, we're in the middle of an apocalypse." The therapist gestured towards the window. "And we're surrounded by demons. None of you owe us anything. After all, this house is the only safe haven maybe in the whole world!"
"I know I just... Everything is exhausting."
"It's easy to become exhausted in tense situations when you're in them long enough. Go rest today, it's not like we can do anything after all. Except maybe start an indoor garden for food..."
"I hope it doesn't come to that," Remy said. "We gotta figure out how to get rid of Alice. I don't wanna lose coffee forever, I don't think I could grow a coffee plant!"
"They can grow pretty big," Logan said. "Though, you'd have to ask Roman or Remus to get one for you. And I don't think either will want to be gone long enough to find one. I don't think Roman will want to leave at all."
"Yeah, good luck separating him from Virgil," Emile laughed. "I'm gonna go get breakfast, then I'll help Delores with the kids since there isn't anything else I can do."
Remy checked outside as Emile left, trying to count the demons. "I'll... start boarding up the windows. Once the demons get enough brain cells, they might start throwing rocks. Emmy! Do we have wooden boards and nails?"
"Check the garage!" Emile called back.
Logan sighed as Remy left, and the professor started walking towards Virgil's room. He passed his own room as he did, hearing a soft pawing on the door. He smiled and opened it, a fluffy kitten darting out.
Buttercup meowed at Logan, and he bent down, picking her up. "I'm guessing you want to see Virgil too?"
Buttercup tried to jump from his arms, but when he started scratching behind her ear she melted into his touch and started purring.
"Clearly we need to move you to his room. Come on now." He continued his way down the hall, looking out a window that he passed. His shoulders dropped slightly when he saw more demons. There was no way he was going to let them take his son from him.
He knocked on Virgil's door before opening and stepping in. Virgil was indeed sitting up on his own, and Roman was holding both of his hands as he sat across from him. The demon sent Logan a smile before quietly shushing, focusing back on Virgil who had his eyes closed in concentration.
Logan frowned in confusion, then his eyes widened when Virgil's white hair started to turn brown. Roman smiled wider and squeezed the gods hands.
Virgil opened his eyes, though they were the same as before. "Did it work?" he asked, picking up a strand of hair to see it was brown. "It worked!"
"Your eyes are still purple and black," Roman told him, and Virgil's face dropped in disappointment. "But you did so well! I told you it was going to be hard, but I'm still amazed that you picked it up so fast."
Buttercup meowed loudly and tried to jump from Logan's arms again. Logan held her closer and walked over to the bed, letting her jump from his arms.
Virgil laughed lightly as she ran to her, shouting for pets. He scratched her chin, making her purr in delight. "I guess hair color is something. I just want to see the kids again," he admitted. "I can hear them, and I occasionally feel their fear, but I want to talk to them again."
"I'm sure they miss you too. At least one of them asks if you're okay everyday. They don't know what happened though," Logan told him. "We still need to figure out what to tell them when they see you again."
"I can't wait to see them. Have they been okay? They get scared sometimes, did something happen?"
"A hellhound might have scared them, but no one was hurt," Roman told him. "Other than Remus, who attacked it. But he's okay! And the kids are safe here. We're not going to let anything happen to them."
"But they still saw it?"
"Kayden did, but no one else. And Emile has been talking with all of them to make sure they're okay. Especially Kayden."
Virgil sighed and focused on Buttercup, "That's good at least."
Logan blinked when Virgil's hair was starting to turn white. "Careful, your appearance is slipping," he warned. "I think you might need to practice that a bit more before you see the kids."
Virgil looked at his bangs. "Yeah... Hopefully I'll get the hang of all of this."
"I guess it's tough to be a god?" Roman asked with a cheesy smile.
"Don't, you're gonna get that song stuck in my head," Virgil laughed.
"It's tough to be a god! But if you-" Roman tried to sing, but Virgil grabbed a pillow and pushed it in his face. Both of them burst out laughing, and Logan smiled at the sight as Virgil rolled his wrists. It was definitely best if Roman stayed with Virgil, perhaps for both of them.
