Spiraling didn't feel like the right word. As you sat in the corner of your room with tears streaming down your face, you wouldn't describe it as spiraling. A spiral was like a spring, and a spring always bounced back. You didn't feel like you'd ever bounce back, so you couldn't be spiraling. Drowning, sinking to the bottom of the ocean. Screaming was only a waste of your breath. You were drowning.

The reason behind it didn't matter. In better words, you couldn't remember. All you wanted was a way out of your head. You had been stuck trying to swim through negative thoughts for what felt like centuries. You were waiting for it to get better, everyone promised it would get better. You thought you could wait it out, but you were drowning.

Waiting wasn't working. There were two things you could do; reach out or let it consume you. Against the will of your negative thoughts, you fought once more, swimming against the current and crawling out the corner. You grabbed your phone, you had almost a dozen missed calls and even more unread texts. Most of them were from your friend, Kate.

Her worry seemed to grow with every unopened message. The last message she sent said she was coming over. It was sent almost 10 minutes ago. The rest of the messages seemed to be from other friends and even your parents. They were concerned.

You'd shut down like this before. Last time it felt like a spiral, like you could out of it better. You didn't see that happening, this time Everything was considerably harder. You managed to drag yourself out of the bed, but you still ended up crying in a corner. The fucked up part was that you had no idea why this was happening. Nothing triggered you, you weren't sad before, but it only took a few days to slip into one of the most depressing states in your life.

" Y/n? Y/n ? Are you here? Please, be here?" The urgency in Kate's calls surprised you.

They shouldn't have been so surprising. The girl cared about you more than you cared about yourself. Kate was always there when you needed her most. You hated reaching out, and she knew that. She had been your knight in shining armor plenty of times. Kate was like a warm blanket in the cold. She was warm and comforting; you had no idea how you had ended up with a friend like her.

When the archer barged into your room, she crouched down to your level; then she grabbed your face in her hands. She searched your face before quickly looking over your body, "Are you hurt?" The pad of her thumb ran across the dry tear stains on your cheek.

" No"

She wrapped her arms around you in a tight embrace. You melted into her hold. A sigh of relief left your mouth when you felt her fingers combing through your hair.

" I'm sorry for not answering the phone," you mumbled into her shoulder.

She removed herself from you, but only enough to look into your eyes," It's fine, I needed to be here in person anyway. Talk to me Y/n"

You began to search for something to look at that wasn't Kate. The brunette sensed your discomfort and intertwined your fingers with hers. Your gaze focused on the hands as you spoke, "I'm drowning, Kate."

You were prepared to elaborate. It was an outrageous claim that many wouldn't understand. They'd need more than that kind of statement. Kate, understood. She knew exactly what you meant. She was beating herself up for not coming sooner. She didn't have time to dwell on her mistakes, she was here now and that's what mattered.

" If you're drowning then consider me a lifeguard"

A small laugh escaped your lips at the metaphor," You're going to save me then?"
