Every breath was staggered. Every step, uneven. The blood dripping down your face served to be nothing more than a strip of paint.
Attacks, you could handle; ambushes, not so much. There was a time you were the best they could get. The most emotionless person to ever be made.
Then you met Yelena. The memory of when you first met was buried underneath many memories similar to it.
You'd be working and Yelena would be there to throw a wrench in your plans. She'd spar you, talk your head off, and even get a step too close to you.
She didn't want to stop you, and you knew this. If she wanted to, she would've already. All she wanted to do was to get you to fumble a little.
She succeeded because the more she'd interfere; the more you started to worry when she didn't.
You wish she was there tonight, to stop this.
Getting into your place was more complicated than it needed to be. The key kept slipping from your unsteady hands. The frustration got to you before the exhaustion. The last bit of energy you had was used to shoulder block the door.
It opened, and you hit the floor, groaning in pain. The ringing in your ears, the only sound you could focus on.
Everything around you is blurry, but you think you see the door close. Then you feel your body being moved. You don't notice much more before you're out cold.
Yelena panicked as she saw your eyes close. There was so much wrong with you. She had no idea where to start.
There was so much blood.
She tried her best to stop the bleeding on her own and when that didn't work she called in her sister for help.
Natasha didn't ask any questions, not even when she arrived at your place. Instead, she and Yelena worked in silence trying to patch you up.
When they finished, your whole abdomen was bandaged, along with your shoulder and head.
Yelena took a step back and stared at your motionless body. All sorts of negative thoughts running through her head.
" She'll be ok, Lena," Natasha rested a hand on her sister's shoulder.
" I should have been there. If I was there, then this would not have happened. Y/n is skilled in combat, this had to be a heavy ambush," Yelena feels guilt seep into her heart.
Natasha pulls the woman into her side," You couldn't have known this would happen."
" I should've known. I've worked contract to contract and have had people come in hordes to attack me. This was bound to happen," she continues to stare at you.
" So she's a contract worker? Is that how you two met," Natasha changes the subject.
Yelena answers plainly," Yes."
" Do you... like her?"
Yelena's face went red, and she sputtered," I no, no I do not like her. Not at all."
A groan from your lips stopped Natasha from teasing her sister even further.
The blonde was by your side in an instant. Her hand lightly holding yours. She watched as your eyes fluttered open. A look of relief washed over her face.
" Oh my god, everything hurts," you mumbled to yourself, trying to sit up.
Yelena's hand stopped you," Stay down."
A smile appears on your face," Nice to see you too."
The former black widow gave you a stern look," You could've died."
The smile on your face grew," Luckily I had you here to save me, my hero."
She blushed harder than she did when Natasha was teasing her.
" Heroes," Natasha interjects, and stepping into your point of view.
" Aren't you?"
" Yelena's sister," Natasha redirected your curiosity.
You glance at Yelena," Meeting the family already? Don't you think it's a little early for that?"
" I uh um... What happened to you?" Yelena shifts the tone of the room.
" Ambush. 5 or maybe 6 guys. I wasn't expecting it. I- I honestly thought I'd die before I made it here," Your eyes travel the length of your body.
The tape hid what you knew to be ugly gashes and bruising. Your eyes met Yelena's," I would definitely be dead if it weren't for you."
" You're lucky I was here, you need to be more careful," her hand caressed your face, and you closed your eyes.
" I know," you answered back.
The two of you stayed in that moment until Natasha cleared her throat," Well, I'm going to go now. Yelena, call me later, and I wish you a speedy recovery..."
" Y/n," you finished, and she nodded.
" Get well soon Y/n," Natasha slipped out of the door and left you alone with Yelena.
You broke the silence," You never told me your sister was an Avenger."
She laughed lightly," Would you have believed me?"
Your head shook from side to side," Probably not."
Once the laughter died down, it seemed like the gravity of the situation hit all over again. Yelena wouldn't meet your eyes.
" When I saw your head hit the floor, I was worried. Then I saw the rest of your body and I panicked. I lost my senses. All of my training, everything I thought I knew, was out of the window. I was scared because I thought I had lost you."
Your body ached when you tried to sit up. Yelena was going to hold you down again, but you held your arm out to stop her. When you finally got in an upright position, Yelena moved closer to you.
You hugged her with no hesitation. Your arms fit perfectly around her waist," I'm sorry, I didn't mean for any of this to happen."
" It's not your fault, I just- I care about you a lot, ok. Maybe more than I should," Yelena's voice is softer than you've ever heard it before.
" I care about you more than I should too," you raise your head to meet her eyes, just to find them already looking at you.
" I think I'm going to kiss you now," she states with certainty.
You chuckle but pull her even closer," Ok."
She leans forward slowly, the anticipation kills you. So much so that you find yourself eagerly meeting her halfway.
It feels like everything slowed down when your lips met. They fit together perfectly, and they moved in harmony. There was passion, but there was also a hint of inexperience. It had been a long time since either of you had kissed anyone.
Yelena's forehead rested against yours when the kiss broke. Her light breath still tickled your lips, which you didn't mind.
" We should do that more often," you are infatuated with her eyes on yours.
Her tongue trails over her bottom lip," We should, maybe something more when you're healed."
Yelena saw the slight shift in your facial features," What is wrong? Does something hurt? Are the bandages-"
" Will you stay? Until I'm healed at least," your gaze is on the floor as you ask.
Yelena gently lifts your head up," I will stay for as long as you'll have me."
She places another gentle peck on your lips. You smile at her, a genuine one, just happy the blonde stumbled into your life. She was annoying at the time, but even way back then, you knew that you'd cared about her a little more than you should have. What you didn't know is that she had always felt like she cared about you a little more than she should have, too.
