The sun cast an orange glow around the sky. Hues of pink and purple made up the background, as wisps of clouds spread around the sun. It was beautiful and that was not fair. How could the sunset be so beautiful, especially when your day was so dimly lit.
It wasn't anyone's fault, but your own. Those words rang hollow in your ears until today. There were consequences for being on your side of the fence. You had avoided them until recently, but you couldn't run anymore.
" There's nowhere for you to go"
You had your back toward them; still focused on the sunset ahead of you. It might be the last one you had the pleasure of seeing. There was a chance they'd lock you up and throw away the key.
The havoc you reeked, the lives you stole, none of it was worth it now. The righteous quest you had once believed in was now a dirt road covered in splatters of blood. You had forgotten the cause, lost yourself in the beauty of chaos.
You danced too close to the flames. In fact, you leaned into the fire smiling whenever you found yourself scorched.
What had ripped you apart so viciously? Why was there sudden remorse in your heart? You knew what it was. Slowly, you turned your back to the sunset. There was a team in front of you, but your eyes zeroed in on a single member.
A woman who stood next to a man who was barely even a man. His arm wrapped protectively around her waist. Touching on the curves that you were so familiar with. It was a cruel trick they played on you. Ending your marathon like run in the criminal underworld was worth so much to them. They'd do it by any means necessary, and they did.
Wanda was too good to be true when she walked into your life. You should've known something was awry then. When someone like her takes an interest in someone like you, there is always an ulterior motive.
Your hands extended in front of you. The Avengers took on a defensive stance. All of them except her. You refused to look her in the eye as she approached you. You didn't want to know more than you already did. What you thought you shared with her was a ruse, it wasn't real. That's what you kept repeating to yourself; jaw clenched with a single tear sliding down your face.
You wanted to wipe it off, to show that they hadn't completely broken you. The opportunity never presented itself. Handcuffs tightly enclosed your wrist. You barely felt the fingers that you knew so well, as they softly brushed against your wrist.
Memories that you and Wanda shared played in the back of your mind. Different images of other times when her hand had grazed yours. The first date, you took her to this really fancy restaurant. It wasn't your type of scene, and it wasn't hers either, but you both dressed up for one night to pretend. She thought it was cute how you reached across the tabletop to lock your fingers with hers.
There was another time when you were trying to teach the woman how to rollerblade. You had dragged her to the skating rink. She held onto the rail most of the night; but when the couple's only song started playing, she let go of the rail; opting for your hand instead. Her grip on your hand was deathly, she wouldn't be falling.
There was a less innocent moment. Others might argue there is no greater innocence than your gentle sin. You stared at each other in the eyes. She was underneath you, yet she was in full control. She tried to yank you down onto her chest, but she quickly found her fingers intertwined with yours. You slowly made your way down her body. Eyes never leaving hers and hands never coming apart.
It hurt to think moments like those weren't real. Two firm hands on either side of your shoulders forced you to walk forward. You stopped, turning your head to see the last of the sunset. The men tried to move you forward, but suddenly they let go. With your hands chained to each other, you faced the sunset once more. Not ready to let the vision of your last moments as a free citizen be disrupted.
