The troubled life of Draco Malfoy is one that is well known. Both of his parents are Death Eaters and he is destined to follow in their path. To Draco, it didn't matter what he wanted as long as his family was proud of him. Up until this point in his life it seems like he was always a slither away from gaining approval from his family. This time he refused to let them down.

Only one thing stood in the way of his greatness, Y/n L/n. She was probably the kindest Hufflepuff in the entire house. Nothing ever dragged her down as she did her best to lift everyone up, even Draco. He had no idea what to think of the kind gestures she gave to him so he always wound up looking especially foolish around the girl.

He hated looking foolish and if it had been any other student he surely would've stopped it. Y/n made Draco feel confident. Though the facade he put on around the school would paint him as the epitome of narcissism, he lacked basic levels of confidence. The Hufflepuff almost made him feel like maybe he was good enough. Almost.

The past couple of weeks Draco hadn't been himself. The Slytherin kept more to himself, he didn't even bully the golden trio. He had been thinking about the death eaters; being one of them. He... he didn't know if that was really what he wanted. Turning his back on the whole school but more specifically Y/n. If she knew about this she'd be disappointed in him.

What he didn't know was that Y/n had already been suspicious of him. The Hufflepuff knew that of all the students at Hogwarts, Draco had the hardest time. She noticed the little changes in him that no one ever did. It scared her that recently it seemed as though he hasn't been sleeping. His hair was no longer neatly combed and the bags under his eyes were darker.

Y/n had to admit that she had a small crush on the boy. She knew he had been horrible to other students and that his family would never approve, but she couldn't help it. In her mind Draco was very sweet and very cute. She knew he wouldn't want her help, but she had to try... for him.

" Hello Draco," she had followed the boy secretly on his trip to the Great Lake. He pulled his wand defensively as he turned around. When he saw Y/n he let out a sigh of relief and lowered his wand, " Jesus Y/ln, you can't just sneak up on people like that."

She simply smiled at and took a seat in the grass. He did the same, leaving a sizable amount of space between the two. " Are you okay? You haven't been acting like yourself lately," Y/n wanted to say more, but feared that she'd scare the boy away.

Draco was surprised that anyone had noticed his change in behavior; he thought he was hiding it pretty well. " I've got a decision to make Y/n. A life changing decision. A decision that could possibly affect everyone that I know and I don't know what to do. I want to make my family proud, but I don't want to lose myself," Draco felt the tears well in his eyes, but refused to release them.

Y/n made a bold move and grabbed the boy's hand. She made sure they caught eyes before she started speaking," Draco you're more than your last name. I know you're a good person and I know you'll do the right thing. You can't let them mold you anymore, it's time for you to be yourself."

He wanted to believe her but he couldn't. He needed the approval of his family. He had strived for since he was a young boy. He wanted this more than anything in the world. He stood up abruptly killing the moment between the two. " You don't understand Y/n. I have to do this, I have to. Once I do this everyone will respect me, my family, my friends, the whole school."

" Draco you're scaring me."

Draco glanced at the girl his eyes void of emotion," Maybe you should be scared of me." He left her in a hurry, more unshed tears in his eyes.

After that moment at the lake Draco did his best to avoid Y/n at all cost. He had become a death eater. Now feeling less of himself than he ever has before.

Tonight was the night. The night Lord Voldemort had commanded him to kill Dumbledore. Draco felt sick to his stomach and it showed on his face.

Y/n could confidently say this was the worst she'd ever seen the boy. She desperately wanted to speak to him but she knew he'd brush her off. By brush her off she meant he'd yell at her or glare at her pushing her farther and farther away.

They were both hurting from this separation. Draco missed the girl dearly and on a day like today he needed her. He shook the thoughts from his head. He needed to focus or else he wouldn't complete the task. If he didn't complete the task Voldemort would surely kill him.

He couldn't do it. Everything had happened too fast for him. His hands wouldn't steady, the tears wouldn't stop, and his voice only quivered. Professor Snape ended up doing it for him. He found himself running away from the scene.

Tears streamed down his face and he choked on his sobs as he rushed down the corridor. Though it was the dead of night he found himself running into someone.

"Draco?" He looked up to see Y/n and started to sob even more. She immediately wrapped her arms around the taller boy. His head rested in the crook of her neck as his body shook violently.

" Y/n I f-fucked u-p." She shushed him and rubbed his back until he stopped crying. She pulled away looking into his eyes. " Draco what happened?"

He can't help the tears that roll down his face as he lifts his sleeve to show her the tattoo. " I-I thought it was t-the only way," he was afraid to look at her to be judged by the person's opinion that mattered most to him.

Y/n now had her own tears to fight back. She couldn't believe the mark on Draco's arm. It broke her heart to see him engulfed in such darkness. " Y/n what do I do? I don't know what to do? Everything's gone bad and it's my fault. Dumbledore's dead, Voldemort's back in power, and I'm stuck being a Death Eater for life that is unless he kills me. I don't want to die! I don't want to die," Draco was hardly speaking to Y/n, but more to himself at this point.

" I don't know, Draco. All I know is that I'll be here for you. I don't care if you're a Death Eater. I care about you and I'm not letting you go through anything else on your own," Y/n spoke with certainty in her voice. She knew no matter what she couldn't let him go through this alone.

For the first time Draco looked at Y/n with all of his raw emotions pouring out. He pulled her into another hug," I love you." The words were mumbled into her hair shoulder so it was unclear to her what he said.

" What?" He slightly pulled away, not fully letting her out of the hug," I love you Y/n." She reached up cupping his cheek before leaning forward and placing her lips on his. The pair kissed hard. She wanted to make sure Draco could feel that she loved him too. Her lips were firm and warm compared the Draco's ice cold lips.

Draco was the one to pull away first a small smile on his lips. This was actually the first time he had smiled in months," I love you too. I will not let the darkness take you from me." Y/n pecked his lips once more and intertwined her hand with Draco's.

He lifted their intertwined hands and kissed her's, " I know."
