There are certain people that have perfect energy. They keep themselves in a zen like palace. Mind, heart, and feelings guarded behind one of the many philosophies.
It may be that, one does not necessarily need another to succeed in life. Or perhaps that the need is primal, which means it has no return rate.
It's hard to decipher which of these particular paths Lauren followed, but she definitely believed in something that restricted her feelings.
She was spiritual before her last break up, but it seems to have pushed her in a farther direction.
She believed that lust could be replicated by any human body. So she found lust in everybody.
However, she had refused to accept love into her life. You knew this because you knew Lauren.
You created art with her on more than one occasion. Lyrics, poems, and paintings were never off the table if you were in a room together.
In a way, she was your muse. You always felt a little more in tune with your art when you were working alongside her.
You were partners of sorts. There's a vulnerability that lies between all layers of art. So when you see someone unpack that vulnerability, it's like you're taking a glimpse into their soul.
It wasn't uncommon for you to spend late nights in the studio. Owning it meant you had the luxury of being there alone when you wanted.
Your phone rang, and you answered it," Hello."
" What are you doing right now?"
It was Lauren.
" In the studio, trying to figure out this song."
Lauren pauses on the other line," Well, I'm at the beach."
You check the time on your phone," What're you doing at the beach at 2:30 in the morning?"
" Being present, Y/n. I could show you if you come meet me," you could hear the waves crashing behind her.
You looked at your non-existent progress and then back at the phone," Alright, send me your location, and I'll be there."
It was unbelievable what the woman could get you to do.
The road was empty, so the drive wasn't long. You park your car next to the only other car in the parking lot.
You could see her silhouette from where you stood. The moon and waves using Lauren to create a living, breathing, art piece.
With your feet bare, you cross the sand. The feeling of cold grains that eventually turned to a solid wetness comforted you.
" Hit this," she takes the joint out of her mouth and then passes it to you.
You follow her directions, letting the smoke tickle your nostrils on the way out. You hand it back to her.
" What am I doing here, Lauren?"
Her head lays itself on your shoulder, arm looping through yours," Keeping me company."
You let out a shaky breath. The contact was familiar, but it never ceased to shock you.
" I could've kept you company in the studio."
She interlocks her finger with yours," I want to be present with you."
You laugh," I'm never more present than when the pen is in my hand, and you know that."
Her eyes meet yours," You're most vulnerable in the studio, but that's when you're most distant."
" Ok, so how do I be present?"
" Sit with me," the two of you sit on the cold sand, "breathe and then take in the view."
She's looking out into the ocean. You couldn't help that your eyes were focused on her. It was as if she was the focal point of mother nature. The beach and the waves existed to frame her in this way; to make her seem ethereal.
" You're always looking at me like that," her fingers traced the back of your hand.
" Like what?"
" Like you could love me," her eyes stay glued to your hands.
You look at the waves," I do love you, Lauren."
Lauren shook her head," You know I'm not a good person to love."
Your brow furrows," Who told you that?"
She doesn't say anything, and that says everything you need to know. Her ex told her that. He was always telling her shit like that, in hopes of getting her to stay. It worked longer than you expected it to, but she eventually left him.
The damage was already done. She took the way he treated her and used it to justify never having faith in love again.
" He lied to you, Lo. You deserve so much more than whatever he gave you, "you feel your jaw clenching just thinking about him.
" How do you know?"
" Because I know you, Lauren. I'm the person that gets to see the thoughts behind all of your art. I see you in your most vulnerable state on a regular basis. Whatever he put you through was bullshit. No one should ever treat you that way."
She traces your jaw," Would you treat me that way?"
" Never," you say immediately.
" How can you be so sure?"
You find her eyes," I would never project my insecurities onto you. I would never make you feel lesser than."
" I want this," Lauren whispers between the two of you.
You lean in, but she pulls back," but, I'm scared of falling short of your expectations. What if I'm not what you want?"
" I want your mind, body, and soul. The pure parts of you along with the dark parts. I want to caress your smile and hold your frown. I don't think there was a time when I didn't want you. I've always wanted you, Lauren, and I don't think my mind will ever change."
You sit still as you watch her take in your features. You see her pause as her eyes find your lips. She glances up at you once more before her gaze falls back down to your lips.
She leans in and you let her. She stops a centimeter short of the kiss. Her breath cascades over your lips. It's like that for what feels like an eternity. You can't take it anymore.
You close the gap. Her lips move softly against yours. You hardly notice her hands on your shoulder, pushing you to lay on the sand.
Your hands rest ghostly on her hips, not wishing to scare her. You let her lead. When she pulls away, you're looking up into her eyes. They are shining down at you.
" I tried so hard not to be in love with you, Y/n."
You sit up, hands still around her waist," How did that work out for you?"
She playfully kisses your cheek," I fell anyway."
" That sounds like a good thing to me," you smile brightly.
" I think it's going to be the best thing that's ever happened to me," the adoration in her eyes as she looks at you makes you blush.
You hold her a little tighter as you watch the beginning of sunrise. You could picture your future together. This would definitely be a story you'd tell at your wedding.
