Shut up and drive

"You realise what this means if we're right?" You thought out loud , watching Steve's face for his reaction.
He gave nothing away, his face void of any emotion. "That SHIELD isn't what we thought it was." His hands seemed to grip tighter on the steering wheel as his attention returned to the road.

Your heart broke as you recalled the data on the drive, that currently sat in your pocket. "If they knew where he was, what he was, why didn't they do anything?"

Steve looked at you briefly, an angry look across his face. "That's what we need to find out."

Your head hit the back of your seat. Your mind wandering as you thought about the two beautiful men you'd left at home. This was supposed to be a quick mission. Get the intel and get home, now nearly twenty four hours later, you were still not home. "I'm going to be in a heap of trouble if we ever get back."

Steve chuckled and looked over at you. "What did they say when you left?"

"Not much considering I didn't tell them."

You could literally feel the judgement pouring off him. "Why not?" He questioned, his eyes never leaving the road.

"Have you met them?" You couldn't help the small laugh that escaped. "They wouldn't of let me go. We do this, and get home. I prove I don't need protecting."

"And what would you have done if they'd done that to you?"

You knew he was right. You would have thrown a fit, and torn the Earth apart looking for them. You couldn't think like that, if you doubted yourself you'd reach out to them. Which at the moment would put both them and you in danger. "Shut up and drive."

The next hour was spent in a comfortable silence as Steve followed the gps on your phone. Turning off the main road, a gated facility came into view. As Steve pulled to a stop you could see him lost in thought. His eyes roaming over the gates in front of you. The place had long since been abandoned, but you could see him remembering his past.
You gently placed a hand on his arm. "Come on Rogers, let's get this over with."

Climbing out of the car, you grabbed your phone. The data file definitely came from this location, now you just needed to find out why. You melted the wire off the surrounding fence, creating a hole large enough for you both to walk through. Looking around you could see a few brick buildings, no sign of life anywhere.

"You want to hide something within a secret organisation, where do you hide it?"

Steve stopped walking before turning to you. "I'm plain sight." He gestured to what looked like a storage building. He walked with determination on his face, getting these answers meant as much to him as it did to you. The door was padlocked shut, not that it mattered. Wherever Steve went, his shield did too. With a swift blow, his shield cut through the lock and he opened the door.

The sound of the door shutting behind you echoed around the room. Making your way down the metal staircase, you saw rows of empty desks. A SHIELD emblem on the wall was illuminated as the lights flickered on. As you reached the bottom of the stairs, you looked up at the wall in front of you. Dusty tattered photos lined the wall. One particular one caught your attention. A handsome young man, well groomed a moustache sat across his lip. "That's my father isn't it?" You asked Steve, your fingers wiping through the layer of dust. Taking the picture off the wall, Steve came up beside you. "Yeah that's Howard. You took the photo out of the frame before folding it up, placing it in your pocket.

You noticed Steve looking at the photo that sat beside the one of your father. A beautiful young woman looking back at him. Brunette wavy hair framed her face. Watching his face, something clicked. "Is that?"

Steve turned to you, no emotion on his face. "Yeah." He swiftly turned from the picture, his behaviour telling you he didn't want to talk about it. Walking round the room you couldn't figure out where the data could have come from. Your attention snapped to Steve as he pulled back an empty, cobweb covered bookcase. You came up beside him, both of you sharing a look before walking into the elevator that had been hidden.

Loading up the application on your phone, you scanned the keypad. The combination flashed up, punching it in, the elevator began to move.

As the doors opened, you had to swallow the lump in your throat. "What the..." You trailed off, taking in your surroundings. Six cryogenic chambers lined the walls, three each side. Walking in the only sound that could be heard was your footsteps and some form of generator. A dated computer sat in the middle of the room. What intrigued you was the updated technology that sat connected to it. "Steve. Over here."

Steve joined you as you held the data drive in your hand. He gave you a slight encouraging nod as you looked up at him. Placing the data drive into the computer, you watched as it whirred to life. Whatever decryption had been blocking you from viewing what was on it, was gone. A video loaded up on the screen. You knew the road. Tony had told you all about your parents death.

You watched as their car crashed into a tree just off the road. A motorbike appearing seconds after. There was only one reason SHIELD would have this footage, it came from here. "SHIELD set it all up." Fire burned in your veins as your anger increased. The video continued playing. You watched as the Winter Soldier murdered both your parents. It wasn't Bucky, you'd never refer to that man as Bucky. That was the Winter Soldier, not the man you loved.

Steve placed his hand on your arm, tearing your attention away from the screen. "It wasn't him Y/N. We need to find out why SHIELD was hiding this."

You shrugged your arm out of his hold, pushing him back slightly. You gestured around the room. "Look around you Steve! SHIELD has been dead for years! It's Hydra, it's always been Hydra!" You could see the conflict on Steve's face, he had been part of SHIELD his whole life. To find out that the good guys weren't the good guys, you couldn't imagine the turmoil he was feeling.

An alert flashed up on your phone, pulling your attention away from him. Your eyes widened. "Shit. Right now we have bigger problems. A missile is heading directly for us."

"Who fired it?"

"Who do you fucking think?"

You grabbed the drive out of the computer, as Steve opened up a grate in the floor. He pulled you to him, using his shield to cover you as the missile hit. A pain shot through your head as you lost consciousness.
