Qrow and Hana were relaxing at home in Acheron's mansion with Evelyn and a couple of the others when Royal idly spoke up and asked a question to break the silence.
"So, Qrow, have you always been as protective of your family as you are?" Royal asked.
"... Yeah, I'm pretty sure I have been." Qrow replied.
"You remember that time you heard about a kid who was bullying me in primary school so you gave him a black eye?" Hana asked, giggling a bit at the memory.
"I've gotta hear this story." Royal said with a tone of excitement and intrigue.
"Alright alright... So for context it's as Hana said. She was in primary school at the time and one of the boys in another class who lived maybe a block or two down the street was picking on Hana. The reason he was picking on her was just petty nonsense, teasing her for having glasses at such a young age and because she liked books so much. She was several reading levels ahead of her age group mind you." Qrow said, prefacing the story.
"Hana was always really smart." Evelyn commented with a smile.
"Awww, you twoooooo..." Hana replied. She couldn't help but smile.
"Anyway so one day she's out and it's kinda wet and cloudy, it was maybe April at the time just starting to really drizzle and so Hana was headed home from school in a rain coat and some big rain boots, when this kid decides to stop her on her way home." Qrow continued.
Flashback to 1987
"Four eyes, four eyes!" They chanted.
"Leave me alone..." An incredibly young and very small meek Hana replied.
"Why should I, you little nerd?" The kid replied. He noticed the book Hana was carrying, which was brand new at the time and smacked it out of her hands, into a muddy puddle of water.
Hana, being the meek and sensitive girl she was, immediately started to cry. At the time Qrow and Evelyn had been playing much further down on the street and because they're humanoid cats, they could hear Hana cry.
With no hesitation, young Qrow jumped on his old secondhand bike and sped down the sidewalk as fast as his small bike would take him over to Hana. When he got there he hopped off and noticed the book in the puddle of water and got angry at the kid as he picked it up out of the puddle.
"Hey! Don't be mean to Hana-chan!" Young Qrow shouted at the kid.
"And what are you gonna do about it, fur face?" The kid replied.
"I don't even have fur on my face you dummy!" Young Qrow said as he walked over.
"Can it, cat boy!" The other boy said, taking a swing at young Qrow, who just sidestepped the punch and slammed one small fist into the boy's eye and another into his stomach, making the boy cry.
"Now go apologize to Hana-chan for ruining her new book, you meanie, or I'll bloody your nose!" Young Qrow replied to the boy who had been bullying Hana, pointing over at her.
He slowly shuffled over, crying and clutching his gut and managed to choke out, between sobs, "I-I'm s-sorry..." before whimpering and crying as he ran home.
Qrow walked over to Hana and gave her a tight hug to try and cheer her up. He got Evelyn to take his bike home and went to use his allowance, which he had been saving for a new bike, to buy ice cream with Hana and to replace her book since it had gotten too wet to be readable or savable by that point. Thankfully, Qrow's kindness cheered Hana up immensely and they sat together hugging on a park bench until Evelyn got home and told Hana's parents what had happened, at which point her parents came to pick them up and take them back home.
Back to the present.
"You know, you didn't have to do all those nice things for me at the time, Mom and Dad would've just bought me a new book." Hana said as Qrow concluded his story.
"I know, but at the time I just really wanted you to stop crying and cheer up. Me replacing it for you also made the book far more special, to the point where I know you still have that book to this day." Qrow replied.
"Besides, it makes me so much happier when you're happy, honey, so I'd gladly do it again any time." He added with a soft smile, giving Hana a kiss.
"I remember you used to call me Hana-chan. Why don't you call me that anymore?" Hana asked.
"Because we've grown up, but I mean we're married, we can call eachother whatever we want, do you want me to start calling you Hana-chan again?" Qrow asked.
"No, honey, sweetie, that sort of thing, or even just Hana is fine, I was just curious." Hana said, dismissing Qrow's question.
"You know, since this was a story about Qrow I was expecting something far more violent than a couple of quick punches and a telling off, but I don't really know why, now." Royal replied.
"At the time Hana was like six, going on seven, and physically I was maybe something like five, technically I was only like three months old. Not like I was gonna pull out a gun with my tiny hands and shoot him over a little bit of childish albeit mean teasing." Qrow responded.
Hana sighed slightly and clung to Qrow's arm gently. "If only Mom and Dad could see us now." She said, resting against him.
"I'm sure they'd be proud, honey. I'm sure they'd be proud..." Qrow replied, giving her another kiss as she rested one hand gently on her abdomen, the two smiling sweetly to eachother as they cuddled.
