Flashback April 2008:

"What do we have?" Maggie asked as 2 paramedics walked into the ER with an infant on a stretcher. "A 4-month-old baby." one of the paramedics said. "According to the neighbors and the police, he has been alone in the apartment for several hours and there is no trace of his parents." the second paramedic said. "Oh my god." Maggie said suddenly. "What is it?" the paramedic asked. "I know the infant." Maggie said. "And from where?" the second paramedic asked. "That's Kelly Severide's son." Maggie said, waving Dr. Rhodes over to her. "The firefighter from 51?" the paramedic asked. "Maggie, what is it?" Connor asked. Maggie pointed to the baby on the stretcher and Connor reacted immediately. "We're going to Baghdad 2. Maggie, try to reach Kelly." Connor said. "Already on it." Maggie said, picking up the phone.

Less than an hour later, Kelly stormed into the emergency room. "Where is he?" Kelly asked. "He's in Baghdad 2. Connor is taking care of him." Maggie said, leading Kelly to the treatment room. "Connor, Kelly is here. Can he come in?" Maggie asked. "Yes, of course." Connor said. Maggie pushed the curtain aside and let Kelly enter. "What the hell happened?" Kelly asked. "We don't know it. According to the paramedics, the little one was found alone in the apartment. He is completely dehydrated and we will now provide him with liquid. Then we have to keep looking." Connor said. "How is he?" Kelly asked. "I want to be completely honest with you. He does not feel good. We have to wait the next 24 hours." Connor said. "Can I stay with him?" Kelly asked. "Of course. I'll let April know that she'll bring you a pillow and a blanket." Connor said and left the room. Kelly pulled up a chair and sat next to Caleb, who was lying in his crib, surrounded by hoses and beeping monitors. April brought him a blanket and a pillow and occasionally kept him company.

For the first 4 months in the hospital, Caleb's condition remained consistently critical. Kelly spent a lot of time with his son and was relieved from time to time by his parents and his younger sister Katie, who was 10 at the time, so that he could go to work or take his mind off things. Caleb was now 8 months old. Over the next few days, his condition improved and when Caleb was 10 months old, Kelly was able to bottle feed him for the first time. When Caleb was 14 months old, Kelly finally got to take him home. In total, Caleb had to stay in the hospital for 10 months.

At the time, Kelly was still living in a rented apartment with his best friends and work colleagues, Sylvie Brett, Matt Casey and Leslie Shay. While Kelly was in the hospital with his son, Matt, Sylvie and Shay baby proofed the apartment and set up Caleb's sleeping space in Kelly's room. Caleb developed splendidly, but also had to accept some strokes of fate. When he was 2 years old, his grandfather (Kelly's father Benny), with whom he was very close, died of a stroke and when he was 4, Shay died in the line of duty with whom he shared a room at the time. After Shay's death, he didn't want anyone in his room. Not even Kelly was allowed to join him and that's why he's the only one who always has his own room to this day.
