December 23rd:
When Caleb got home from school the next afternoon, he stopped outside the front door. From inside he heard laughter and Christmas music. He unlocked the door and cautiously entered the house. “Hey. What's going on here?” Caleb asked. In the kitchen the kids were with Katie baking Christmas cookies. "Oh hey, Caleb. How was school?" Katie asked. "Fine, but that doesn't answer my question." Caleb said, still irritated. "We're making Christmas cookies." Layla said. "And listen to Christmas music." Kayla said. "I see. The kitchen looks like a bomb went off." Caleb said, making his way to the kitchen counter. "Will you help us?" Katie asked. "Maybe later. It's been pretty tough today." Caleb said. "Were you guys busy?" Katie asked. "We wrote 3 exams and had to finish 2 subjects so we can start the new subjects after the Christmas break." Caleb said. "Oh man. Then you're probably happy now that you can recover for 2 weeks.” Katie said. "Kayab help me...please." Matty said. "No, me first." Hayden said. “No, me. He is my bubby." Benjamin said. "Relax...Huh." Caleb said. “Guys, leave Caleb alone for a little while.” Katie said. "Where are the others?" Caleb asked. "Stella and Sylvie are out in the conservatory cleaning up a bit and the boys are off getting the Christmas tree and running some errands for tomorrow." Katie said. "Ok. Then I'll go out and see if they both need help, then I'll come back and help you." Caleb said. "But me first." Benjamin said. Caleb shook his head with a smile and went into the conservatory. "Hey Caleb." Sylvie said. “Kiki.” Lydia said excitedly and ran into his arms. "Hey K. How was today?" Stella asked. Caleb shrugged. "Oh my, that bad?" Stella asked. "We wrote 3 exams and had to finish everything that was still open." Caleb said, helping to push the couch aside. "Now you can recover for 2 weeks." Sylvie said. "Fortunately." Caleb said. "Have you heard anything about looking after the two boys?" Stella asked. "Yes. After the holidays we'll all sit down and discuss everything like, when, where and so on.” Caleb said. "I think it's great that you're doing something like that." Sylvie said. "What's their name again?" Stella asked. "Jamiro and Luian." Caleb said. Lydia scurried impatiently between them all. "What's the matter, Lydia? Are you excited for Santa?" Stella asked. Lydia grinned at her and nodded her head. Then the doorbell rang and Lydia got even more excited. "Sasa." she said. "No, Lydia. That's not Santa Claus. He won't come until Sunday, or in the night before Sunday.” Caleb said and picked her up. Caleb took her back to the kitchen where Kelly, Matt and the boys were putting the groceries down. "Hey Caleb." Matt said. "Hey." Caleb said. "Dada." Lydia said, stretching out her arms. "Hey cutie." Kelly said, taking her from Caleb. "She thought Santa was coming." Caleb said. "How was your day?" Matt asked. "Exhausting." Caleb said. "Did the exams go well?" Kelly asked. "We'll see then." Caleb said, sampling the cookie dough. "Caleb ate the dough." Layla said. "I tried it and I have to say the dough passed the test." Caleb said. "Will you help us carry the tree in?" Kelly asked. "Yeah sure." Caleb said. Kelly, Matt, and Caleb went into the garage and got the tree out of the back of Matt's pickup truck. "Man, you meant well again." Caleb said. "Andy and Juli picked the tree." Matt said as he untied the guy ropes. They carried the tree in and out into the conservatory. There they placed the tree in the bracket and Caleb tightened the screws. "So, who's going to help me up now?" Caleb asked. Lydia smiled and sat on his lap. "That's not what I meant." Caleb said, hugging his little sister from behind and kissing her. Kelly helped him up, which Lydia didn't like. "Oh man. We should have called you a screamer.” Caleb said, picking her up. "Are you ready?" Stella asked. "Yes." Matt said. “Kids come. The Christmas tree can be decorated." Stella said. Less than 10 seconds later, 6 excited children ran into the conservatory. Together they decorated the Christmas tree and put the last trays of Christmas cookies in the oven. After the tree was decorated, the cookies were finished baking, and the kitchen was tidied up, they settled into their home theater and watched Christmas movies.
