The next morning Caleb was awake early. He grabbed a book from one of the bookshelves, lay down in the hammock and started reading. When he heard Stella, Sylvie, Matt and Kelly about to leave the house, he got up and went downstairs. "Hey. Good morning, why are you awake already?" Kelly asked, putting on his jacket. "Because I couldn't sleep anymore." Caleb said. "Are you nervous yet?" Sylvie asked. "No, but with 10 kids under 8 you are automatically awake very early." Caleb said. "All right. We gave you money for the school supplies you want to buy." Kelly said. "Great. Thanks, Dad." Caleb said. "You're welcome. So, we have to go now." Kelly said and gave him a kiss on the head. "Okay, take care and see you tomorrow." Caleb said. "See you tomorrow." Stella said. Caleb closed the door behind them, got a bowl of cereal and sat down in front of the TV. 1 hour later Aiko and Elyas came into the living room with the babies. "Good morning. Are you awake yet?" Aiko asked. "Yes. I couldn't sleep anymore." Caleb said and turned off the television. "You don't have to turn off the TV." Elyas said. "Yes, because I have company now." Caleb said, taking Crystal from Elyas. "I'll make the three of them their bottles." Elyas said and went into the kitchen. "So, how are you?" Aiko asked. "Quite good. I'll go to the mall later and buy some new school supplies." Caleb said. "Ok. Do you need help?" Aiko asked. "That would be great." Caleb said. "Ok. Then I'll drive you and come with you." Aiko said. "Cool. Thank you." Caleb said. When Elyas came out of the kitchen, he gave Aiko and Caleb a bottle each and then put Jason on his lap. When the others came downstairs, they went into the kitchen and had breakfast together. "Do we need anything else from the supermarket? Caleb and I are going to the mall later." Aiko said. "Depends on what we want to do today." Elyas said. "We'll look in the folder." Julian said and took the recipe folder from the shelf. The kids leafed through the folder. "We can also just buy something frozen and put it in the oven or fry it in the pan." Aiko said. "I don't think we'll find anything. You can see what you find." Andrew said. "Good. Anything else?" Aiko asked. Elyas looked in the pantry and kitchen cupboards. "Fruit, certainly. Then we could replenish the noodle and rice supply." Elyas said. "Ok. Anything else?" Aiko asked and wrote it down on the list. "No. Otherwise, I don't think we need anything more." Elyas said. "Good. Otherwise, you'll call if anything else comes to mind." Aiko said. "We do. See you later then." Elyas said. "See you later." Caleb said and Elyas closed the door behind them.
There was already a lot going on in the mall. "Man. "I hate this back-to-school shopping campaign." Caleb said. "Why?" Aiko asked. "Simply because it's pure panic buying. The kids get a hundred different stationery items and then, throughout the school year, they only use 1 or 2 of those pens." Caleb said. "And you?" Aiko asked. "I admit it quite honestly. At first, I was the same way, but now I only buy what I really need." Caleb said. "Then let's see what we find." Aiko said. The two went to the school supplies department and Caleb looked around. Then, they went to the supermarket and then back home. Aiko parked the car in the garage. They got out, got their groceries from the trunk and went into the house through the connecting door. "And? Did you find everything you needed?" Elyas asked, taking the shopping bags from Caleb. "Yes. Everything in here." Caleb said, holding up the other bag. "Very good. By the way. Two packages came for you." Elyas said and put the in the fridge. "Again. I just got the package with the new equipment recently." Caleb said. Elyas just shrugged. "Where are the packages?" Caleb asked. "They're on the coffee table." Elyas said. Caleb went into the living room where the other kids were sitting in front of the TV watching a movie. "Caleb, finally. Can you open the package before Hayden does?" Julian asked. Caleb sat in the middle and pulled the first, larger package towards him and opened it. "Uh. These are just my new school books." Caleb said. "And what's in here?" Levi asked. "We'll find out right now." Caleb said, putting the package of school books on the floor and pulling the second package toward him. "It's definitely a lot easier." Caleb said. He opened it, took out a piece of paper and scanned it. "Uh. And that's now the final number of my new soccer equipment." Caleb said and took out the shirts, pants and whatever else was in there. "Not bad." Andrew marveled. Suddenly Caleb clutched his lower right side of the abdomen. "Are you okay?" Andrew asked. "I don't know." Caleb said, rubbing his side. "Elyas. Aiko. Can you come over?" Andrew called out. "What's wrong?" Elyas asked as he and Aiko came into the living room. "Caleb has a stomach ache." Layla said. "Where does it hurt?" Aiko asked. "Here." Caleb said, showing them the spot. "That could be the appendix, right?" Andrew asked. "Possible. I suggest we go to the Med." Elyas said. "Yes, please." Caleb said, his voice distorted with pain. Elyas helped Caleb get dressed and get into the car. "I'll call Med and then try to reach Kelly and Stella." Aiko said and closed the car door. Elyas drove to Med as quickly as possible because Caleb was in increasing pain. Meanwhile, at home, Aiko tries to reach Kelly and/or Stella. "They are definitely on call now. Just try calling the firehouse." Andrew said. "I'll do that." Aiko said and dialed the firehouse's number. "Is Caleb going to die now?" Benjamin asked. Andrew, Julian and Aiko looked at him. "What? No, of course not." Andrew said. "Good." Benjamin said and went back into the living room. Andrew and Julian looked at each other, shaking their heads. Aiko has now reached out to Kylie.
Phone call between Aiko and Kylie: "Hey Kylie. It's Aiko." Aiko said. "Hi Aiko. What's up?" Kylie asked. "Listen. Are Stella or Kelly there?" Aiko asked. "No, they're on a call. What's going on?" Kylie asked. "It's about Caleb. He has severe pain in his right lower abdomen. Elyas has now taken him to the Med." Aiko said. "Oh no. I'll let them know as soon as they get back." Kylie said. "Great. Thank you, Kylie." Aiko said. "No problem. See you then." Kylie said. "Yes, see you then." Aiko said and hung up.
At the Firehouse: After the phone call, Kylie knocked on Chief Boden's office door. "Come in." Boden said. "Chief. Aiko just called. Elyas had to take Caleb to Med because he had severe abdominal pain. From the sounds of it, it could be the appendix." Kylie explained. "Oh man. Just before he moves to Dubai." Boden said and took off his glasses. "Yes. I'll let Kelly and Stella know as soon as they get back. I just wanted to let you know." Kylie said. "Thanks, Kylie." Boden said. Kylie nodded and closed the office door again. At the same moment she heard the trucks coming back. "Hey Kylie. What's up?" Cruz asked. "Aiko just called." Kylie said. "Is everything okay at home?" Matt asked. "Elyas had to take Caleb to the Med. Suspected appendix." Kylie said. "What?" Kelly asked. "I have already informed Boden. You can go to Med if you want." Kylie said. "Good. Cruz, you take over until then." Kelly said, grabbing his jacket. "Let me know if you know anything." Matt called after them. "And just before he goes to Dubai." Gallo said. "Oh well. Better now than in Dubai, right?" Ritter asked, a little unsure. "That's right." Sylvie said.
At Med: "Hey Maggie." Stella said as she came into the emergency room with Kelly. «Hey you two. Don't worry. Caleb's appendix ruptured and he's currently undergoing surgery." Maggie said. "Ok. How can you use 'don't worry,' 'burst appendix,' and 'currently having surgery' in the same sentence?" Kelly asked. "Thanks, Maggie. Where is Elyas?" Stella asked. "I'm here." Elyas said. They sat down in the waiting area and waited. About 10 minutes later Will joined them. "And? How is he?" Kelly asked. "He's fine. The surgery went well and he is already awake again." Will said. "Can we see him?" Stella asked. "Yes, of course. Come. I'll take you to him." Will said. Will knocked on Caleb's room door and entered. "Caleb. Your parents are here." Will said and let Kelly, Stella and Elyas enter. Caleb tried to get up. "Hey. Slow down. How are you?" Stella asked and helped him. "My stomach hurts." Caleb groaned. "No worries. The pain will go away, but I'll tell the nurse to give you something for the pain." Will said. "Thanks, Will." Kelly said. Will nodded with a smile and left the room. A few minutes later, a nurse came into the room and gave Caleb some pain medication. Caleb snuggled into his blanket and closed his eyes. "What exactly happened?" Stella asked. "I honestly can't tell you exactly. Caleb was at the mall with Aiko to buy his new school supplies and some groceries. When they got back home, Caleb unpacked his two packages that arrived today. Suddenly Andrew called and said that Caleb was in pain." Elyas said. "And he didn't say anything before?" Kelly asked. "He didn't show any signs of being in any pain until a few hours ago." Elyas said. "I didn't have any pain either." Caleb said, sitting up slowly. "Hey. How are you?" Stella asked. "Better. I swear. Everything was exactly as Elyas said." Caleb said. "It's ok." Kelly smiled and sat down on the bed next to him.
2 days later Caleb was able to go home.
