"Please don't tell me that's what I think." Caleb said. "Is Aunt Katie pregnant?" Kayla asked. "Will you do us a favor and act surprised if she tells you?" Matt asked. "As long as her baby lets me sleep, I'll be fine." Caleb said, sitting back down. "What were you doing in the room anyway?" Kelly asked. "I heard something fall." Caleb said. Kelly eyed his son. "What? Fine, I was curious and wanted to take a look at the room. We've been living here for a few months now and I've never seen the two guest rooms." Caleb said. Then Andrew and Julian came home. "Hey you two. How was your afternoon?" Sylvie asked. The two just stood in the kitchen door. "Hey, what's going on?" Sylvie asked. "You look like you saw a ghost." Caleb said jokingly. "I think we did though." Andrew said, his voice shaking. "What do you mean?" Stella asked. "Kids, go to your rooms, please." Kelly said. "Oh man. We're never allowed to stay." Kayla said. The little ones padded out of the kitchen and upstairs to their rooms. "Well then, tell us. What happened?" Sylvie asked. Andrew took a deep breath. "We're not sure, but we think we saw our parents." Julian said. "Wait, what?" Matt asked. "You said your dad died in a car accident and your mom hasn't looked after you since." Caleb said. "He fell off a cliff with his car." Andrew said. "And let me guess. His body was never found." Kelly said. Andrew and Julian nodded. "Did they see you too?" Caleb asked. "No, we only saw them by accident. And do you know what the worst was?" Julian asked. "No, what?" Matt asked. "They had a stroller with them. They've already started a new family and Mom nearly killed us." Andrew said. "Hey. You now have a new family that loves you and has given you a new home." Sylvie smiled. "Yes, we know. And we are extremely grateful to you for that. But it would have been nice if they had told us the truth from the start and just given us away at the time. Then we wouldn't have had all the trouble." Andrew said. "But remember. If they had put you in a foster family back then, you would now be living in different families and probably would never have seen each other again." Stella said. "You said you saw them but they didn't see you, right?" Caleb asked. "Yes." Julian said. "Caleb, what are you up to?" Kelly asked with foreboding. "What if we find them and show them what became of the 4? I'm sure the Intelligence Unit will help us with that." Caleb said. "I don't know if that's such a good idea." Julian said. "Yeah, that only opens up old wounds. We just want to carry on as normal, as if nothing happened." Andrew said. "Understandable. Just a thought though." Caleb said. "Okay guys. To distract you. What do you think about the fact that you now look at the Christmas catalog and write down your Christmas wishes," Stella suggested. "And we'll get the little ones out of their rooms and start decorating the house." Sylvie said. Matt and Kelly stayed in the kitchen with the boys cutting up the vegetables for dinner while Stella and Sylvie went upstairs and fetched the little ones from their rooms. "Do you guys have a Christmas tree, too?" Andrew asked. "Yes, but we always get it a few days before Christmas because otherwise it won't last long." Kelly said. "With two puppies, understandable," said Julian. "Who says it's because of the puppies." Caleb said. "How was it in your home?" Matt asked. "We only ever had a small Christmas tree. But we always decorated it so that you couldn't see the branches anymore." Andrew said. "That reminds me of something. Where are we going to put the Christmas tree this year?" Caleb asked. Kelly and Matt looked at each other. "That's a pretty good question." Matt said. "Mom, Aunt Stella." Julian called. "What is it?" Stella asked. "Where are we putting the Christmas tree this year?" Caleb asked. "How about here, by the stairs?" Sylvie asked. "Or why don't we put him out in the conservatory. Now that it's getting cold outside anyway, it would be nice and cozy with the fire pit and the Christmas tree." Stella said. "Then we'll put the tree on the other side of the room. I don't want the fire department to come." Kelly said. "Yes, imagine that. Firefighters need to come to a firefighter family." Caleb said, and everyone laughed. "Mommy, Daddy, it's snowing," Kayla said and immediately ran back into the living room. When the others came into the living room, the little ones were standing in the conservatory and pressed their faces against the pane. "Okay, who wants to build a snowman?" Caleb asked. "Me." the 4 boys shouted and ran in to put on their winter clothes. While Stella and Sylvie finished decorating the house and Matt and Kelly cleaned up the kitchen, the kids played in the garden and built snowmen and castles.
After the fun outside, the little ones in particular were pretty frozen. After a warm bath and a few cuddles, however, they were warmed up again and ready for dinner. After dinner, Andrew, Julian and Caleb played a video game in the living room while the three puppies lounged on the boy's laps. "Could you turn down the TV a little?" Stella said, coming into the living room with the twins in her arms. "Of course." Caleb said, taking the remote and turning it down a bit. The adults sat down with the boys and watched them play. "How are you, after today's experience?" Sylvie asked. "What experience?" Andrew asked with a smile. "We want nothing more to do with our past. As you said. We have a new family now." Julian said. "We're looking forward to meeting the rest of the family, too." Andrew said. "That's a good attitude. Would be nice if I could do that too." Caleb said. "You can do it. The last few months have been good." Kelly said. "Yes, yes. I'm still scared I'll fall back into old patterns." Caleb said. "We'll definitely be there when the time comes." Kelly said. "You don't have to remind me now." Caleb said. "Well, whatever. But for the three of you, upstairs now. Tomorrow is school." Kelly said. "Come on. We're just finishing the game." Julian said. "Just one more game." Matt said. The boys finished their game and then switched off the television. "Good night." Andrew said. "Good night, guys. Sleep well." Sylvie said. Andrew, Caleb and Julian went upstairs and to their rooms. "Good night." Caleb said. "Good night." Andrew and Julian said. While Caleb was brushing his teeth in the bathroom, Kelly came into his room and sat on the bed. Caleb turned off the light in the bathroom and closed the door. "Hey, what's up?" Caleb asked when he saw his dad. "I just wanted to talk to you again." Kelly said. "Is this about what I said earlier?" Caleb asked. "Listen. You know you can tell us anything." Kelly said. "Oh man, dad. We've had this conversation a thousand times. Yes, I know that I can come to you at any time and I will. But for now, everything is fine and the only thing I come to you with right now are my exams that I need to study for or need a signature for." Caleb said, putting on his pajamas. "I just want you to be comfortable." Kelly said. "And why shouldn't I be comfortable?" Caleb asked, getting into bed. "You had a little trouble at first with the situation that I remarried and you had siblings." Kelly said. "Having to share you wasn't exactly what I wanted, but I'm over it." Caleb said. "Have you heard from Renee again?" Kelly asked. "No, fortunately not. You?" Caleb asked. Kelly just shook his head. "It's fine then." Caleb said, kissing his dad on the cheek. "Good night. Sleep tight." Kelly said, tucking him in and kissing his forehead. "I love you, Dad." Caleb said. "Love you too." Kelly said, turning off the light and left the room.
