1 week later
School started again today. Caleb got up, dressed and went downstairs to the kitchen. "Good morning." Caleb said. "Good morning. How are you?" Stella asked. "Good." Caleb said. "We're glad to hear that." Kelly said, bringing him a plate of waffles. "Why can't I be this sick during school? I don't get any of that during the holidays." Caleb said. "Good morning." Matt said, coming into the kitchen. "Morning." Kelly and Stella said. "Well, you? How are you?" Matt asked. "Great." Caleb said. "Are you sure?" Matt asked. "Yeah, just annoyed because I'm always sick during the holidays." Caleb said. "You were on sick leave before the summer holidays. Doesn't that count?" Matt asked. "Not really. I still had to do my homework." Caleb said. "Anyway, we're glad you're feeling better." Stella said, preparing the bottles for the babies. Caleb put his plate in the sink and went upstairs to get his school bag. On the way down, he heard the twin's cry. "I'll take one." Caleb said, walking into the room with Stella. Caleb picked up Crystal and brought her downstairs. "By the way, I'll be home a little later today. I'll talk to Mr. White and Mr. Chen about how we're going to do the mentoring project." Caleb said, handing Crystal to Kelly. "That's fine. Do you want me to pick you up?" Kelly asked. "I don't know how long it's going to be." Caleb said. "I can wait in the car." Kelly said. "OK. I have to go. See you this afternoon." Caleb said. "Have fun." Stella said. "Thank you... Good morning, Aunt Sylvie... Bye Aunt Sylvie." Caleb said and left the house. "Bye." Sylvie said, walking into the kitchen with Jason in her arms.
Caleb's friends were already waiting in the schoolyard. "Hey guys." Caleb said, giving everyone a high five. "Hey. Happy belated birthday." Talia said hugging him. "Thanks." Caleb said. "So how was your vacation?" Tiffany asked. "Well, let me put it that way. I was in bed the whole 2 weeks." Caleb said. "Oh no. Were you sick?" Mila asked. "Yes. First, I got angina and then the flu." Caleb said. "That sucks. But are you feeling better now?" Nigel asked. "Yeah, just in time for school." Caleb said. "Any news about the babysitters?" Blake asked. "Yes, what should I say. They're landing in Chicago on January 20th." Caleb said on the way into the school building. "That's on Friday next week already." Zane said. "And how long are they staying?" Bailey asked. "12 months, with an option for an additional 6, 9 or 12 months." Caleb said. "Cool. And what are their names and where are they from?" Annabelle asked. "It's a boy and a girl. Both are 24 years old. The boy's name is Elyas and he's from Malaysia and her name is Aiko and she's from Japan." Caleb explained. "That's great. But we can still meet, right?" Mila asked. "Yes of course. You can still come by anytime. The two are mainly there for the little ones. Though I'll probably be homeschooling the first week." Caleb said. "That's understandable." Liam said. "However, we can't go to the skater park on Friday either. And next week I'm generally going to be a bit curt as we have to get everything set up." Caleb said. "No problem. We can postpone that." Nigel said. The teens went to their lockers and got their school books. "Do you have any idea where exactly the two are from?" Zane asked. "Yes. Elyas is from Kuala Lumpur and Aiko is from Tokyo." Caleb said.
After class, Caleb knocked on his principal's office door and stepped inside. "Ah, Caleb. Come in." Mr. White said. Caleb sat down at the table and Mr. White got the papers. "How are you?" Mr. White asked. "Better again." Caleb said. "Oh my. Have you been ill?" Mr. White asked. "Yes, unfortunately. I was in bed the whole 2 weeks. First, I had angina, then I got the flu." Caleb said. "Oh man. That sucks, though." Mr. White said and opened the file. "So. I have a few things I'd like to discuss with you." Mr. White said. "Okay, but can I ask you something first?" Caleb asked. "Yes of course. What's up?" Mr. White asked. "We will soon have 2 au-pairs. The two lands in Chicago next Friday. Now I wanted to ask if I could do homeschooling from 1/23-1/27?" Caleb asked. "That sounds exciting. Yes, of course, that's no problem at all. Jamiro and Luian, the two Brazilian boys you'll be mentoring, are still in an English camp at the moment anyway and won't be back until mid-February." Mr. White explained. "What's an English camp?" Caleb asked. "It's kind of a language camp at our school. All refugee children will travel together across the USA for 4 weeks, getting to know the country and culture together and also improving their English skills together." Mr. White explained. "That sounds great." Caleb said. "Yes. As I said, the two will be back in mid-February and until then you don't have to do anything else. As soon as the two of them are back, we will all sit together, including their teacher and your teacher, and then we will discuss everything else." Mr. White explained. "OK. All right." Caleb said. "Good. Then I wish you a nice afternoon and you just get in touch if you have any questions or want to know anything else." Mr. White said. "I'll do it. Thank you, Mr. White." Caleb said and left the office. Kelly was waiting for his oldest in the school parking lot. "It's f***** cold outside." Caleb said as he got into the car. "That's what winter is like." Kelly smiled. Caleb rubbed his hands. "So, what did Mr. White say?" Kelly asked, starting the engine. Caleb told him everything he and Mr. White discussed. "That sounds exciting. I love what your school is doing for all the refugee kids." Kelly said. "Yes. Oh yes, dad. I can do homeschooling the first week that Elyas and Aiko are with us." Caleb said. "Okay, that's good. Then you can give them a little support." Kelly said. "Yes. Oh man. I'm so excited and looking forward to them both moving in with us." Caleb said. "How about we both go shopping for some decorations for both of their rooms." Kelly suggested. "Yes." Caleb said. The two droves to the mall and got lamps, picture frames and other decorative items.
At home, Matt helped put everything in their respective rooms. "We got an email from Elyas and Aiko introducing themselves." Matt said on the way downstairs. In the kitchen, Caleb sat down at the kitchen counter and opened the mail. "Hi. My name is Elyas Wee. I'm 24 years old and I'm from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I live in Kuala Lumpur city center with my parents and 6 younger siblings. I like to play badminton and soccer. I also like to cook and bake. I am really looking forward to finally getting to know you and to supporting you in your everyday life. Bye for now. Kind regards Elyas Wee. PS I'll get back to you as soon as I have my travel dates." Caleb read. "That sounds nice." Kelly said. "Yes. And what makes me happy, he likes to play soccer." Caleb grinned. "He's staying for 12 months. Maybe we can sign him up for a badminton club if he wants to." Sylvie suggested. "That's a great idea. We can talk to him about it then." Stella said. "What's Aiko writing?" Kelly asked. "Wait a minute." Caleb said, opening Aiko's email. "Hi. My name is Aiko Yamamoto. I'm 24 years old and I'm from Tokyo, Japan. I live with my parents, my younger sister and my twin brother just outside of Tokyo. I like to draw, play tennis and swim. I took English lessons at school and now I want to improve my English skills. I look forward to getting to know you and supporting you in your everyday life. See you soon and love, Aiko Yamamoto. PS I'll get back to you as soon as I get my travel details." Caleb read the second email. "Shall I text them back and introduce ourselves?" Caleb asked. "Didn't they already get a letter of introduction from us?" Matt asked. Caleb shrugged. "We can text them back and maybe give one of our phone numbers, too." Stella said. "We can just write a short reply email and add our phone numbers." Matt said. "Shall I?" Caleb asked. "Yes, do it. And we can think about what we can do with them at the weekend." Sylvie said. Caleb wrote a reply email and included Matt, Kelly, Sylvie and Stella's phone numbers. Then Caleb did his homework. After dinner, Andrew, Caleb and Julian played a video game in the living room.
