New Year's Eve

Today was Caleb's 15th birthday. Caleb was still asleep when Matty, Benjamin, Hayden, Levi and Lydia sneaked into his room. "Kayab." Benjamin whispered. "Kayab." Matty said, nudging him. Levi and Hayden climbed onto the bed and jumped up and down. "Kiki." Lydia screeched excitedly. "What is it?" Caleb asked, annoyed, and ducked under the covers. "Wake up Kayab." Matty said. "What?" Caleb asked, sitting up. Hayden and Levi knelt on the bed and hugged Caleb. "Appy Bithday." the boys said. "Thanks guys." Caleb said. "Budday." Lydia said, trying to climb onto the bed. Caleb picked her up and put her on the bed. Lydia crawled onto his lap and hugged him. "Can you open that?" Benjamin asked, handing him Santa's Christmas present. Caleb still hadn't opened his Christmas presents because, along with the angina, he also caught the flu and has been in bed for the past week. He's still not 100% fit, but he's doing better. "Yes, open it." Levi said. While Caleb opened the gift, Stella walked into the room. "Boys, come on. Let Caleb sleep a little longer." Stella said. "Mommy." Lydia said, holding out her arms. "Yes, that goes for you too, young lady." Stella smiled and hugged her. "But we want to know what's inside." Levi said. "You'll find out soon enough." Stella said. "That's fine. I've already opened it anyway." Caleb said, lifting the lid. "What's in it?" Benjamin asked. "A music Play." Caleb said. "Hey. We already have that." Matty said. "Yes. Jason has the same thing." Levi said. Caleb put the music Play on the bed and pulled a piece of paper out of the box. "Dear Caleb. For all the days you feel like your world is falling apart. Merry Christmas. S." Caleb read out. "Turn it on." Benjamin said. Caleb turned on the jukebox and there was the sound of the sea. "It's boring." Benjamin said. "Yes. You can't dance to it." Levi said. "It's not meant for you either." Stella said. Caleb switched the box off again and put it on the bedside table. "Now you guys go back downstairs so Caleb can get some rest." Stella said. "Okay." the boys said and ran out of the room. Lydia freed herself from Stella's arms, ran out of the room as well, tripped over her feet and crawled the rest of the way to the stairs. Caleb and Stella smiled. "Come here. Happy birthday." Stella smiled and hugged him. "Thanks mom." Caleb said. "How are you feeling?" Stella asked. "Better." Caleb said. "You got it pretty bad." Stella said. Caleb yawned and nodded. "I'll leave you alone again." Stella said and gave him a kiss. "I'm coming down." Caleb said. "You sure you're fit enough?" Stella asked. "Yes. I've been in bed all week. I want to be part of family life again." Caleb said, standing up. "Okay." Stella said. Stella left the room and Caleb got dressed. When he came down, everyone was sitting at the breakfast table. "First." Layla said, jumping up and running to Caleb and hugging him. "Happy Birthday." Kayla said, hugging him too. "Thanks girls." Caleb said, kissing both of them on the head. "How are you feeling?" Katie asked. Caleb shrugged and sat down at the table, taking Lydia on his lap. "You're still a bit pale." Sylvie said. Kelly got the cupcake, lit the candle and everyone sang 'Happy Birthday'. Caleb had his hands full making sure Lydia didn't touch the flames. "You want to blow it out?" Caleb asked. He pulled the plate towards him and Lydia began to blow. "Hard, Lydi." Andrew said. "Mommy." Lydia said and Caleb let her down. Caleb made a wish and blew out the candle. After breakfast the kids went into the living room and Caleb opened his Christmas presents. "Dad? Why did you actually pack your bag? I thought you were free today?" Caleb asked. "I am." Kelly said, sitting down on the couch. "But?" Caleb asked, putting the wrapping paper in the trash bag with the others. "Oh well. Since you've been in bed all week, I figured it would do you good to get out here and get some rest." Kelly said. Caleb knew right away what his dad was trying to say. "We're going to the cabin?" Caleb asked. "What cabin?" Andrew asked. "My dad has a cabin in the woods. He left the cabin to me when he died and since then Caleb and I have made regular trips there when he needs some space." Kelly explained. "Well, regularly. We were last there just before Benny was born." Caleb said. "So, this is like a secret hiding place for you two?" Julian asked. "Something like that." Kelly laughed. "Daddy, I want to go too." Benjamin begged. "Sorry, buddy. But today I'm going alone with Caleb." Kelly said and took him on his lap. Caleb had meanwhile gone to his room to pack his bag. Meanwhile, Kelly got his Mustang out of the garage. "Well then, we wish you a lot of fun." Matt said. "And you're doing your best to get fit again," Stella said, hugging Caleb. "I will." Caleb said, tossing his bag in the trunk and climbing into the passenger seat. "Get him down a bit." Stella said, kissing Kelly. "I will." Kelly smiled. Kelly got in the car and drove off.

Arriving at the cabin, Kelly opened the door and turned on the light. "Woah." Caleb marveled. "I've been up here a few times over the past few weeks cleaning up and getting everything ready." Kelly said. "Is that why you always came home a little later than the others?" Caleb asked. "Yes." Kelly said. The two settled in and then made themselves comfortable on the couch. "And? What do we want to do?" Kelly asked. "Nothing." Caleb said, snuggling up against Kelly. "Are you alright?" Kelly asked, touching his forehead. Caleb shook his head. "You want to go to bed?" Kelly asked. "I don't know." Caleb said, sitting up. "Come. Lay down again. I'll get your blanket." Kelly said and went into the bedroom. He covered Caleb with the blanket and lit a fire in the fireplace. Kelly sat down with him and turned on the TV.

When Caleb woke up 2 hours later, Kelly was watching 'Superstore'. "Hey. How are you feeling?" Kelly asked. "Like the Squad truck rolled over me." Caleb said, rubbing his eyes. "You look better than you did 2 hours ago." Kelly smiled. "I slept two hours?" Caleb asked. "Mhmm, oh by the way. I've still got plenty of messages from the boys and girls from Intelligence and Med. They wish you a happy birthday and get well soon." Kelly said. "Thanks. I guess I'll have a lot of messages on my phone then, too." Caleb said, pulling his phone out. "Would you like me to make you some tea too?" Kelly asked. "Yes please." Caleb said, scrolling through his messages. With the kettle running, Kelly went into the bedroom. "Dad, can we watch Sully?" Caleb asked. "We can, but I have something for you first." Kelly said, re-entering the living area with some presents. "More gifts?" Caleb asked, sitting on the couch. "Yes. Happy birthday." Kelly smiled and hugged him. "Thanks Dad." Caleb said, opening the presents. "Cool. A race wheel and pedals for my PlayStation. Thank you." Caleb said happily and hugged his dad. "You're welcome, son." Kelly said. "Dad, is it true we're getting 2 babysitters now?" Caleb asked as he unwrapped the other presents. "Yes. A boy and a girl. Both 24 years old. Her name is Aiko and his name is Elyas," Kelly said. "Cool. And where are they from?" Caleb asked. "Aiko is from Tokyo and Elyas from Malaysia. I think from Kuala Lumpur." Kelly said. "And when are they coming?" Caleb asked. "In 3 weeks. On Friday; January 20xth. The two will land at O'Hare." Kelly said. "That's exciting." Caleb said. "It is. The little ones are really looking forward." Kelly said. "Dad. Should I ask if I can homeschool the first week, they're with us?" Caleb asked. "First of all, we'll see how you're doing in terms of health. After that we can talk about it again." Kelly said. The two made themselves comfortable on the couch and watched the film 'Sully'.
