Chapter 20

The next call goes to a single-family home. Severide, Casey and Chief Boden got a first overview. "Chief, looks like there are children living in the house." Kelly said, pointing to the bikes and scooters in the driveway. Suddenly there was a loud bang and a big fireball rose into the sky. "Hermann water supply set up. Everyone else evacuates the building." Chief Boden gave the order. Squad and Truck gained access to the house and searched all the rooms. On the 2nd floor, Kelly and Matt found 4 boys hiding in a closet. "Hey boys. Pretty hot in here, don't you think?" Matt asked. The youngest of the 4 boys clung to the eldest. "Hey, don't be afraid. We are Matt and Kelly. We'll get you out of here." Matt said. "You can't stay in here." Kelly said, holding out his arm. The oldest of the four boys handed the youngest to Kelly and pushed the second youngest toward Matt. "Okay, I've got you." Kelly said, picking up the youngest. Matt grabbed the second youngest and Capp and Tony, who have now joined, escorted the two older boys outside. Outside they came towards 4 paramedics. Violet and Hawkins took care of the 2 younger children and the other 2 paramedics took care of the 2 older children. "Is the house empty?" Boden asked. Kelly and Matt took off their helmets and breathing masks. 'Yes, chief. The house is empty." Matt confirmed. "What about the parents?" Boden asked. Kelly and Matt looked at him and just shrugged. "We're taking the four boys to med for further tests." Evan informed. Kelly, Matt and Chief Boden nodded. 51 packed up and drove back to the station.

At Med, the 4 brothers were excepted by Dr. Rhodes, Dr. Halstead and Dr. Manning. "4 brothers, between 3 and 12 years old. Smoke inhalation suspected." Violet informed the doctors. "Treatment rooms 2 and 3 are free." Maggie said. "Is there anyone we can contact?" Maggie asked. The oldest shook his head while Connor listened to his lungs. "Fire department." the second youngest said next door. 'No, Levi. We're not calling the firefighters. They have to work now and have no time." the eldest said. "Okay, let's start at the beginning. What's your name?" Will asked. «My name is Andrew. This is Julian and the two little ones over there are called Levi and Hayden." the eldest said. "All right Andrew. You seem to be the oldest to me. And there really isn't anyone we can call?" Will asked. "No. Our dad died in a car accident two and a half years ago. Our mother is I don't know where and we don't have any family anymore." Andrew explained. "Then I guess we'll have to contact Child Services." Maggie said. "No, please don't." Andrew pleaded. "Why not. They will take care of you and find you a new home." Maggie said. "I'm sure they will, but in different foster families. We don't want to be separated." Andrew said. "It seems to me that you have often had to do with the youth welfare office." Connor said. "Yes, since our dad died, they have been with us regularly. So far, we have always been able to convince them. But now they're going to put us in different families because no family would take 4 boys." Andrew explained. Natalie, Will, Connor and Maggie looked at each other. "All right. We'll talk to our boss and see what we can do." Maggie said. "And you rest until then. We'll be right back." Natalie said and left the room with the others. "We'll go upstairs and talk to Mrs. Goodwin. Will you take care of the boys until then?" Will asked. "Of course." Maggie said, getting some coloring books and crayons for Hayden and Levi and comics for Andrew and Julian.

Connor knocked on Mrs. Goodwin's office door. "Come in." Mrs. Goodwin said and the three entered. "What can I do for you all?" Mrs. Goodwin asked. "We have a little problem in the emergency room." Connor said. "Yes, as follows. 4 brothers were brought in who were rescued from a burning house." Natalie continued. "They don't have anyone to take care of them anymore and they don't want us to call Child Services because they're afraid they'll get separated." Will said. "Oh well. We definitely have to contact the youth welfare office. Are there no other family members? What about the parents?" asked Mrs. Goodwin. "The father died in a car accident two and a half years ago and the mother doesn't take care of the 4 at all." Natalie explained. "And they don't have anyone else either." Will added. "Although, there might be another possibility." Connor said. "What's that?" Mrs Goodwin asked. "Perhaps we could ask 51 if Casey and Severide could come by for a moment. They got the 4 boys out of the house." Connor said. At that moment Mrs. Goodwin was paged. "I don't think that will be necessary anymore, the two of them have just arrived." Mrs. Goodwin informed. The 4 went to the emergency room and were met by Maggie, Matt and Kelly.
