Good lord what is this———————————————————
When Enid woke up, she couldn't help but feel like she was being watched. It was not an unusual sensation, admittedly there were mornings that she would wake up to find Wednesday just dead staring at her, and while it kind of freaked her out at first, she had begun to get used to it. But this morning felt different. The eyes that were watching her felt more sinister than usual. And they woke her up hours before her alarm was supposed to go off and Enid was pissed. So there was that too.
Bolting upright in bed, Enid scanned the dark room, her night-sensitive eyes being able to make out the general shapes of the objects in the room even before they had fully adjusted to the light level. Everything seemed fairly normal, the murder board in the right place, all her stuffed animals in what she liked to refer to as "organized chaos", her roommate's obnoxious typewriter that she had gradually gotten used to listening to sitting imperiously on her desk. Everything was fine, that is until her roaming eyes reached Wednesday's bed.
Instead of the shape of a person lying under the covers or even sitting up on the bed which like, weird, but it is Wednesday, there are two small, yellow eyes glaring at her through the darkness. And if there is one thing Enid knows about her kooky roommate, it's that she doesn't have yellow eyes.
Enid shot out of her bed and practically lept to the light switch on the other side of the room, nearly braining herself on the nightstand in her haste. She flipped it on, suddenly illuminating the room and allowing Enid to see what exactly took up residence on her roommate's bed.
"Oh, my GAWD!" At the sudden overly adoring squeal, the lithe black cat that was sitting on Wednesday's bed let out a scathing hiss and dove off of the mattress, fleeing to the darkness underneath the bed.
Enid clamped her hand over her mouth, but the damage had already been done. "No, no, no, no, I'm sorry!" She lamented, kneeling down in front of the bed. The cat just glared at her judgmentally. "I didn't mean to startle you, you're just so cute!" At this, the glare got impossibly more murderous, but Enid didn't notice. "I promise I'll keep it down, you can come back out, I won't hurt you."
The feline's eyes narrowed as it scrutinized her, never once blinking. Then, after what felt like forever, the cat slowly crept out from its hiding place. Enid backed up as it slunk forward, trying to seem nonthreatening. If she had a tail to lower, she would have. Gradually, ever so cautiously, the cat stood upright in the room's gentle light. Now that it was standing still in the light, Enid could see that the cat had sleek, shiny black fur and a lean, delicate frame. It was a shorthair (or so she assumed, she was far more proficient in dog breeds than cats) and was currently doing its best to murder her with its glare. If looks could kill, Enid would be dead ten times over.
The animal gracefully leapt up onto the bed, no small feat considering its size, and only then did Enid notice that, while the rest of the cat was pitch black, it had an adorable little pink button nose. To contain another squeal and not startle the cat, Enid had to turn around and flap her hands in excitement at the image. When she turned back around, she was faced with the most unimpressed look that a cat could possibly muster.
"Ok, Sinclair," she muttered to herself. (Wednesday had called her Sinclair so much it just kinda stuck) "It's just a cat. You can do this."
With newfound determination. Enid carefully held her hand out to the cat, who backed up at first, but slowly came around and sniffed it. It begrudgingly allowed her to scratch behind its ears before sitting back as if to say "no more".
