Nevermore was beautiful at this time of year. The week before Christmas break, the students and remaining staff decorated the school. They embellished the sharp edges and uglier parts of the school with colourful lights and hung baubles that lined the hallway ceilings. The Great Hall was also the subject of much decorating, in preparation for the feast they held on the final night before the students left for break.

It was Enid's favourite time of year without question. She looked forward to Christmas every year for many reasons, she loved the beauty of it all. Those initial snowflakes fell at the cusp of winter (particularly on campus), the colours that lit up the school, both multicoloured lights and warm ones. It gave the school a different tone completely. It had magical energy about it that made her giddy inside.

There was also the fact that everyone generally seemed to be far more chipper and upbeat. It was like Enid's personality was everyone's personality during the season. It was just people enjoying each other's company and finishing up what is typically a crazy year.

Things for Enid were slightly different this year because for once, Enid had something extremely interesting going on in her life.

Wednesday Addams. This was the girl that had turned the school on its head in the short semester she'd attended so far. She'd somehow found herself wrapped up in murder mysteries, monsters, and a love triangle all in one. Wednesday Addams that was all sharp words and threats, cold-hearted and callous, who loved all the things that Enid didn't. Wednesday Addams who also now happened to be the most important thing in Enid's life.

Throughout knowing each other, they had grown a special connection. They'd had fights that Enid had never experienced with other friends before, but each time, the space they spent apart had been more painful and they had managed to reconcile. In Enid's own words, "We work. We shouldn't, but we do". Their connection was so strong that Enid saved Wednesday's life. Something Wednesday frequently reminds Enid about, saying that she is "forever indebted" to her.

This year, for reasons Enid didn't quite understand why, she wasn't bursting at the seams to leave Nevermore and get home to her family for break. All she could think about was the time she would spend away from her friends, and of course, Wednesday.

Tonight though, she pushed those thoughts out of her mind and roamed the halls of the school, basking in the festivities. Students lingered in open dormitories of the common room beside the fire, playing games, and eating snacks. Some were in the halls, lining up outside classrooms for extracurricular activities, and clubs or talking to the few remaining teachers assigned to keep an eye on the students and school in its final days before closing the doors for the break.

Nevermore sure was a strange place, but Enid loved the way Christmas brought out the best in it, and its people.

Wednesday Addams, on the contrary, hated Christmas. Enid would often think about her Ebenezer Scrooge / Grinch-like nature. Turned her nose up, complaining or huffing and puffing at any attempt Enid made to get her in the Christmas spirit. She had claimed that the decorations caused her to break out into hives, so she had spent the majority of her time tucked away in their dorm working on her novels.
