Summary:

Enid has always been perceived as a sweet girl. That isn't entirely wrong. But inside of her is a strength not many have. Wednesday is witness to five times it shows.

Or, Enid is strong and Wednesday thinks it's hot.

1.

Wednesday had never been so cold in her life, as she and Enid trekked through the snow in the woods. The wind bit at her skin, causing her fingers and cheeks to become numb, the snow coming up over her boots and all the way to her knees, soaking through the thin clothes she had chosen to wear in a moment of stupidity.

"Are we almost there?" Enid asked, lifting up a leg and shaking off snow. It didn't quite come to her knees. She had the unfair advantage of height.

"Yes," Wednesday said after examining the trees they were passing. Her phone was secure in her pocket, occasionally giving off an annoying buzz.

"Wednesday, I think they're texting you again," Enid said after the third annoying buzz. Wednesday glanced down at her pocket and took out her phone, trying to get her numb fingers to comply with her brain as she attempted to unlock it. Curse the device. The only reason she still had it was because of the fascinating mystery of the stalker. She finally managed to get in, staring at the text she'd been sent.

"When I get my hands on you, I will..." she started to read it out loud, then stopped. Enid wouldn't want to hear the last part.

"Maybe we really shouldn't be in here alone before dark," Enid said, giving the trees around them an uneasy look, "oh god, this was such a stupid idea."

"You didn't have to come along," Wednesday took the crumpled-up note Fester had sent her from her pocket and scanned over it. I hid it in the largest tree. They were almost at the biggest tree in the forest.

"I didn't want you to go on your own. It's so cold, you could freeze and I would never know. At least this way we get to freeze together," Enid peeked over her shoulder and reread the note, "is that it?" She pointed straight ahead of them, a tall tree looming in the distance. Wednesday nodded and took a step forward, her foot getting caught in a root that was underneath the snow, Wednesday falling forward. Enid grabbed her arm, pulling her up just moments before she would have crashed into a snowdrift and gotten entirely soaked.

Wednesday took a deep breath, Enid smiling at her and pulling her back to her feet. They didn't mention it as they continued making their way to the tree. A breeze blew by once they were both standing at its base, Enid's hair blowing into her face, the girl in question giggling and pushing it out of her eyes.

Wednesday shivered and wiped her nose on her sleeve, looking up at the magnificent organism in front of her.

It was the largest tree she had ever seen, including the huge dead one in her family graveyard that she used to climb with Pugsley in. It had a strong and textured bark, massive branches twisting in various directions, a few hollows in it from old wounds. It had lived a long life.

"There," Wednesday pointed up towards the middle of the tree, where a few branches' beginnings created a small platform just large enough for a person to stand, or sit. Or hide weapons for their niece to use on her stalker, in Fester's case.

"All the way up there?" Enid raised an eyebrow.

"Yes."

"And how exactly do you plan to get up there?"

Wednesday circled the base. It was too large to climb the typical way. And though she had a single knife with her, even that wasn't enough to secure a steady grip. It would also feel slightly wrong to stick a weapon into such an old being. Wednesday continued to examine it.
