There was absolutely no time to rest once you got to Urokodaki's little house. He told Tanjiro to leave Nezuko in the small bedroom he had. After making sure she was asleep and covered by a blanket, the three of you set off up the path.
"Uhm....Mr Urokodaki.....where exactly does this path lead?" You ask looking around, remaining wary of your surroundings. It was dark, so the fear that demons might be close by was hanging over you again.
"It goes up the mountain." He replied.
"This late at night? What does he want us to do?" Tanjiro whispered to you. You could only shrug in response.
"Don't know. We'll just have to wait and see." You whispered back as you continued up the mountain.
The three of you were trekking for quite a while until Urokodaki stopped and turned to you both.
"For the next part of the test, you must both get back down to the bottom of the mountain before dawn." With that, the fog picked up around him and he disappeared without saying another word.
"Back down to the bottom by dawn, huh? That shouldn't be too difficult. I think I can remember the way down." You felt confident which seemed to rub off on Tanjiro as well.
"Yeah! Plus, if you ever get unsure then I'll be able to smell our path back down! We'll be alright!" He grabbed your hand. "Come on Y/N! Let's get going!" He cheered before pulling you along.
You didn't get very far though, before you tripped over a stretch of rope that had been laid down on the ground. Both you and Tanjiro fell over and felt something swung over the top of you.
Pulling yourself up from the ground, you could feel the air blow against your cheek and quickly moved out of the way of a massive log that was swinging across the path.
"....h-how did I just...." Your jaw dropped as you stood there, bemused as to how you managed to dodge the log. Shaking your head, you crouch down and help Tanjiro to his feet. "You alright there kiddo?"
"Y-yeah I'm fine....he didn't mention anything about traps! There must be more on the trail back! But how did he manage to get them all in place?!" He asked as you shrugged again.
"No clue, but we now know we have to be extra careful. Let's continue." You grabbed his hand and took the lead, keeping an eye out for any more ropes that might've been laid out.
However it proved to be very difficult for you to find them, as one seemed to pop up out of nowhere in a place where you weren't looking.
You tripped over many more ropes, some triggered rocks to be launched at you both, others made you both fall over and roll down slopes which led to even more traps.
Both of you were getting battered and bruised and you also had to help Tanjiro out of a hole in the ground. His sense of smell wasn't really helping that much at the moment.
"Ouch.....ouch....I-I guess I shouldn't have assumed this would be simple....we are training to become demon slayers after all....." You panted and held onto your knees. There were bruises all over your face and your legs were starting to ache.
Add the fact that the air was really thin up on the mountain, you were beginning to struggle.
"I-I'm surprised I've been able to go on for this long....n-not used to the air being so thin...." You kept breathing heavily as Tanjiro patted your back.
"C-come on Y/N! We can't let this get in our way! We have to get back down! I have to get back down! For Nezuko!" Still, the boys determination remained. As long as he had that, you would be inspired to be there with him.
