"It was a good idea to ask this kind person to allow us to hitch a ride on the back of their wagon." You said to Kanao who was sat on the edge of the wooden wagon, her legs dangling just above the ground.
You on the other hand, were sat up against the side of the wagon, sprawled out as you took this as an opportunity to rest.
Tokito did not keep you at his residence for very long. It was clear to him that you and Kanao were far more skilled than all the other slayers that he was training. He was satisfied with the progress you two had made, so he sent you both on your way.
"I agree. While I am used to doing a lot of walking, this is a pleasant break from doing so." Kanao said.
Both of you had walked a considerable distance and done extremely draining exercises under both the hashira you had visited so far. Thankfully as you were walking, you ran into someone who was returning home on their horse and wagon.
Wanting to keep your energy up and not get overtired, you asked if they would allow you to hitch a ride, since they were going in the same direction you were.
Of course, they were kind enough to oblige.
"Have you been to the big city before, Kanao?" You asked her, mainly wanting to make small talk as usual.
"I've never had the chance to. It would take such a long time to get to from the Butterfly Mansion. But I have heard many things about it." She said.
"It's...kinda surreal really. It felt almost like a dream to be honest." You said, reflecting back to when you and Tanjiro found your way to Asakusa.
"There are these huge wagon like things that run on metal tracks that are in the ground. They're not trains...I think I heard someone call them trams? Oh, and then there are motorised wagons too! Like there's no need for a horse! Isn't that so cool?!" You rambled on, the memories of all the incredible things you saw made you want to go back and see them all over again.
"Being from a village in the mountains...seeing those things was like stepping into a completely different world. If everything had gone another way...maybe I never would've seen those things..." You said.
"Hmm...and we would not have met each other." Kanao said, turning her head to smile at you.
"The hardships we've been through...you losing your mother and me not being wanted by mine...in a way, maybe they were meant to happen..." She said.
You nodded your head. What she was saying might've sounded bad, but maybe she was right.
"Everything happens for a reason...it just would've been better if they weren't so tragic...or harrowing..." You said.
"Indeed." Kanao replied, moving herself away from the edge of the wagon, crawling over and setting herself down next to you.
By now, you knew the routine and made sure your shoulder was open for her to rest her head on. Her eyes did most of the talking for her in this kind of situation. You could read exactly what she wanted by the way she looked at you.
"Thank you." She said, noticing the opening she had and laying her head on your shoulder.
"Get some sleep. We should be at our next stop by tomorrow. I'll wake you." You said to Kanao.
Whether or not you'd actually manage to stay awake though, was a different story.
~
"Y/N-KUUUUUUNNNNN~!!!! WAKE UUUUUPPPPP!!!!"
"AHHHH W-WHAT?!"
You had fallen asleep after Kanao had nodded off. However, you were suddenly awoken by a loud shrieking in your ear which almost caused a heart attack.
