Chapter 39: Kanzaki

You took your leave from the flame hashira's estate soon after you had finished drinking your tea. Tanjiro had stayed behind to begin receiving his guidance from Rengoku.

The flame hashira was eager to start training him right away, despite only just arriving home to recover from his injuries.

It only made you admire him more and more.

As you walked back to the butterfly mansion, you heard cawing from above you and watched as your kasugai crow landed on your shoulder.

"Don't tell me I have a mission now....I was just heading back to the butterfly mansion." You groaned.

"No mission!" The crow said as it settled itself down on your shoulder and began pruning it's feathers.

"Okay...." You were a little confused as to why your kasugai crow had just flown in and settled itself down on your shoulder.

It had never done this before and you usually only saw it when you had a mission. You never really bonded with the bird as much as you had hoped when you received it after final selection.

Not that you complained though. You smiled and assisted the crow by plucking out some of the feathers it was trying to get at.

An action that the crow appreciated alongside some frequent head scratches.

Soon enough, you arrived back at the butterfly mansion and your crow flew into a nearby tree to settle down.

The smell of food greeted you once you walked inside accompanied by the loud voice of Inosuke, sounding as if he was demanding more food.

"Not until Tanjiro and Y/N get back! They still need to eat as well!" Aoi raised her voice at him just as you turned the corner and entered the room.

"Perfect timing Y/N. Inosuke was about to eat your share!" Aoi said when she saw you, a slight puzzled look taking its place on her face when she saw you were alone.

"Tanjiro is with Rengoku. He'll probably be back later." You said as you sat down, trying to avoid Inosuke's demands to fight him.

"I see. Well I'll keep his share safe until he gets back." The girl said, turning back around.

Inosuke soon left, leaving the two of you alone as you ate and she prepared more food and washed any dishes that she came across.

It was silent for a while until you finished eating and took your plate over to the sink so you could wash it.

"You don't need to wash the plate you know. I can easily do it when I get a moment." Aoi said to you as you stood next to her washing your plate.

"I'll do it anyway. Besides, you're really busy doing a lot of other things. It's one less thing for you to worry about." You said, grinning at her while you put the plate to one side so it could dry.

"I....guess you're right. Thanks." She said, flashing a small smile at you before becoming focused again.

For a little while, you stood and watched her work diligently. Right up until she glanced at you through the corner of her eye.

"Is something the matter? Why are you staring?" She asked.

"Sorry I....didn't mean to stare I just....after what you told me about your experience during final selection, I see no reason for you to doubt yourself in anyway." You said causing her to cease what she was doing and turn to face you.

"Why shouldn't I doubt myself? What am I meant to amount to if I pass through the final selection due to mere luck?! Wearing this uniform.....sometimes doesn't feel right. I didn't do anything to gain the right to wear it! Not like the rest of you anyway...." Her eyes turned towards the ground as she clenched her fists tightly.
