You didn't even realise that you had nodded off. After Rengoku had slayed both the demons on the train and everyone was celebrating, everything went dark.
The only thing you could really remember was that the lights were flickering. After that, nothing.
When you opened your eyes, you were confused to find yourself under a blanket with your head on a pillow rather than on a train.
"Huh.....? Where....am I?" You groggily rubbed your eyes and then your head as you sat yourself up.
The more you looked around, the more familiar your surroundings became. "It....can't be...."
You were about to get up, but was stopped when the door to the room opened. Your jaw dropped as you realised just who it was.
"Good morning sweetie! Did you sleep well last night?" It was your mother.
"M-Mother....? B-But....I-I....y-you...." You couldn't speak. The tears were welling up in your eyes as you choked on your words.
"What's wrong sweetie? Why are you crying? Did something happen?" She walked over to you and immediately engulfed you in a hug.
Her warmth and gentle touch, providing you the comfort you so desperately needed. You returned the gesture, holding onto her with a death like grip.
"Oh dear....did you have a bad dream? Is that it?" You felt the caring touch of your mothers fingers gently combing through your hair as you felt your nerves settle and your grip around her loosen.
"I-I....guess...." You sniffled and looked up at her. "W-when....is father coming home from demon slaying?"
A baffled look took its place on your mothers face. "Demon slaying? There are no such thing as demons Y/N! Goodness me that must've been a really bad dream!" The baffled look was quickly replaced by one of concern.
"Th-there....isn't? Then....w-what does father do?" You ask, feeling more and more confused.
"Have you really forgotten honey? He is transporting logs to those who need them. He should be back by the end of the day." She gently caressed your face with her hand.
"I-I see...." You nuzzled your way further into her.
"I don't know what you've dreamt about, but it has clearly shook you up a lot! Let's calm you down, shall we?" She smiled and went back to stroking your hair.
And you spent quite a while calming down in your mothers arms. The whole time wondering whether everything had been just a really bad dream.
You still remembered everything you had been through, but this seemed so real. For the first time in ages, you felt safe.
"I-I love you....so much...." You muttered as you buried your face in her clothes.
"I love you too honey...." You felt her kiss the top of your head, and a smile spread across your face.
After a little while, you had calmed down and had gotten ready for the day ahead of you. When you stepped outside, the usual busy street greeted you.
"Y/N!!!" You turned to see Tanjiro waving at you from a distance. As usual, a basket of charcoal on his back which was already being emptied by many people on the street.
You walked over to him with a smile on your face and ruffled his hair happily. "Hey Tanjiro! Busy as ever I see!"
The boy nodded and grinned with you. "Of course! Anything to make sure my family has everything they need!"
Your smile faltered a little. There was a moment where you had a little flashback of having to bury Tanjiro's whole family.
"And....they're okay right? All....happy and healthy?" You ask, sweating a little which Tanjiro noticed.
